The widespread use of primaquine (PQ) and chloroquine (CQ), together, may be responsible for the relatively few, isolated cases of chloroquine-resistant P. vivax (CQRPV) that have been reported from South America. We report here a case of P. vivax from the Amazon Basin of Peru that recurred against normally therapeutic blood levels of CQ. Four out of 540 patients treated with combination CQ and...

BACKGROUND Plasmodium vivax is responsible for a significant proportion of malaria cases worldwide and is increasingly reported as a cause of severe disease. The objective of this study was to characterize severe vivax disease among children hospitalized in intensive care units (ICUs) in the Western Brazilian Amazon, and to identify risk factors associated with disease severity. METHODS AND F...

INTRODUCTION The human malaria parasite, Plasmodium vivax, is proving more difficult to control and eliminate than Plasmodium falciparum in areas of co-transmission. Comparisons of the genetic structure of sympatric parasite populations may provide insight into the mechanisms underlying the resilience of P. vivax and can help guide malaria control programs. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPLE FINDINGS P. v...

Background: The purity and correct folding of a recombinant protein is critical for any structural, biochemical and vaccine design studies. Plasmodium vivax Duffy binding protein-II is a leading vaccine candidate for vivax malaria. In the present study, the purification process of recombinant DBP-IX (a variant form of PvDBP-II) was optimized to achieve the highest yield and purity. Moreover, ...

To compare the severity of Plasmodium vivax malaria with that of P. falciparum malaria, we conducted a retrospective cross-sectional study of 356 adults hospitalized with malaria (2009-2011) in Pakistan. P. vivax and P. falciparum accounted for 83% and 13% of cases, respectively; 79.9% of patients with severe malaria were infected with P. vivax.

Introduction: The use of Sulfadoxine and pyrimethamine (SP) for treatment of vivax malaria is not common in most of malarious areas because of sensivity of this parasite to chloroquine. But, Plasmodium vivax isolates are exposed to SP because of mixed infection with P.falciparum and this subject has lead to emergence of mutations in P.vdhfr gene. As Plasmodium vivax is the most prevalent specie...

Malaria is one of the most significant tropical diseases, and of the Plasmodium species that cause human malaria, P. vivax is the most geographically widespread. However, P. vivax remains a relatively neglected human parasite since research is typically limited to laboratories with direct access to parasite isolates from endemic field settings or from non-human primate models. This restricted r...

BACKGROUND Trypanosomiasis is a disease caused by Trypanosoma (Dutonella) vivax, a hemoprotozoa that can affect bovines. In South America, the sanguineous form is mechanically transmitted from one mammalian host (ruminant) to another by the bite of a blood-sucking insect or by needles contaminated with infected blood. The negative impact of the parasitosis caused by T. vivax infection on the re...

Even though Plasmodium vivax is highly prevalent in India, the studies are limited not only due to its benign nature but also because of the magnitude of severity caused by P. falciparum malaria. In a recent interesting case report published in this journal it has been reported that this is the first reported case of vivax malaria associated with acute pancreatitis, which resulted in mortality ...

BACKGROUND Plasmodium vivax is responsible for approximately 80 million malaria cases in the world. Apical membrane antigen1 (AMA-1) is a type I integral membrane protein present in all Plasmodium species. AMA-1 interferes in critical steps of invasion of human hepatocytes by sporozoites and red blood cells by merozoites and is one of the most immunodominant antigens for eliciting a protective ...
