Environmental change often requires evolutionary responses, and therefore understanding the genetic architecture of susceptible populations is essential for predicting their capacity to respond adaptively. However, quantitative genetic studies are rarely targeted at populations considered vulnerable to such environmental perturbations. Here, we assess the level of heritable variation in the abi...

Environmental effects on health are associated with several factors: absent or inadequate environmental health services, such as water supply, sanitation, solid and hazardous waste management and shelter; environmental degradation, such as pollution of air, water and soil, and food contamination; global environmental problems, such as reduction of biodiversity and degradation of ecosystems thro...

China’s rapid industrialization and urbanization in recent decades have deteriorated its water resource quality. This study focused on pollution terms of the chemical oxygen demand (COD) levels ammonia nitrogen industrial household discharges different Chinese provinces. Although heterogeneity environmental Kuznets curves (EKCs) from provinces has been studied, positions provincial EKCs (which ...

the preferred colour for surimi is white, but surimi prepared from light fillets of common carp (cyprinus carpio) is slightly pink. hydrogen peroxide (h2o2; 1-3% v/v) with and without sodium tri-polyphosphate (stp; 1-2% w/v) was added to a sodium carbonate bath (ph 7.0-11.5) resulting in a final ph range of 4.4 to 10.1 which was injected into carp fillets. after soaking and tumbling for 30 min ...

Section 316(b) of the Clean Water Act (CWA) requires that "the location, design, construction, and capacity of cooling water intake structures reflect the best technology available for minimizing adverse environmental impact." As the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) develops new regulations to implement Section 316(b), much of the debate has centered on adverse impingement and entrain...

The salmon louse is a highly abundant ectoparasitic copepod of salmonids in the North Pacific and Atlantic. Widespread and rapid development of resistance to chemical agents used to delouse salmonids on marine farms is now threatening the continued development of the aquaculture industry and have served as a potent catalyst for the development of alternative pest management strategies. These in...

We obtain the Shannon capacity of a fading channel with channel side information at the transmitter and receiver, and at the receiver alone. The optimal power adaptation in the former case is “water-pouring” in time, analogous to water-pouring in frequency for time-invariant frequency-selective fading channels. Inverting the channel results in a large capacity penalty in severe fading.

biochar and activated carbon, as carbon-rich porous materials, have wide environmental applications. in the present research, rice husk (rh) was used for preparation of biochar at 400, 600, and 800 °c under simple pyrolysis, physically-activated carbon with water steam, chemically-activated carbon with potassium hydroxide (koh), and physiochemically-activated carbon with koh and steam. physical...

OBJECTIVES There is little information about continued use of point-of-use technologies after disaster relief efforts. After the 2004 tsunami, the Red Cross distributed ceramic water filters in Sri Lanka. This study determined factors associated with filter disuse and evaluate the quality of household drinking water. METHODS A cross-sectional survey of water sources and treatment, filter use ...
