Serpentine receptors comprise a large family of membrane receptors distributed over diverse organisms, such as bacteria, fungi, plants and all metazoans. However, the presence of serpentine receptors in protozoan parasites is largely unknown so far. In the present study we performed a genome-wide search for proteins containing seven transmembrane domains (7-TM) in the human malaria parasite Pla...

With the increasing need for molecular reactions with small liquid volume in biomedical and chemical analyses, miniature mixers have captured considerable attention. Due to the nature of laminar flow in a millimeter-size and blow flow channel, mixing, or the molecular mass transfer in miniature mixers is usually dominated by molecular diffusion. The long diffusion time and mixing distance make ...

We used continuous flow micro-devices as bioreactors for the production of a glycosylated pharmaceutical product (a monoclonal antibody). We cultured CHO cells on the surface of PMMA/PDMS micro-channels that had been textured by micromachining and coated with fibronectin. Three different micro-channel geometries (a wavy channel, a zigzag channel, and a series of donut-shape reservoirs) were tes...

We describe a new methodology for studying persistence of topological features across a family of spaces or point-cloud data sets, called zigzag persistence. Building on classical results about quiver representations, zigzag persistence generalises the highly successful theory of persistent homology and addresses several situations which are not covered by that theory. In this paper we develop ...

This report describes a case of a serpentine fusiform aneurysm of the internal carotid artery in a patient who presented with visual disturbances. The serpentine aneurysm was treated successfully by coil trapping and occlusion of the parent artery, accompanied by balloon dilation. Nine months post-operatively, the patient's visual acuity had improved considerably.

Printed circuit heat exchangers (PCHE) are designed to improve recovery and energy saving in supercritical CO2 (S-CO2) power cycles. In the current study, a modified channel PCHE is proposed based on regular straight zigzag channel. The thermal–hydraulic performance of four different types numerically investigated methods verified by both experimental numerical results. results presented for Re...

As a building block toward simple and scalable solution for massive random access, we introduce collision-resolution algorithms using successive interference cancellation (SIC) based on the received signals, with no need any coordination or codebook differentiation. We first consider two-user multiple access ZigZag algorithm. prove that original modified version of it, called double-zipper ZigZ...

The operating parameters have an important impact on the performance of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). This paper investigates experimentally and numerically temperature relative humidity which significant influence PEMFC current density. These are adjusted simultaneously dynamically during operation. A 50 cm2 active area single-cell with serpentine flow channel was studied. In o...

Grazing and fire and are major forces shaping patterns of native and exotic species diversity in many grasslands, yet both of these disturbances have notoriously variable effects. Few studies have examined how landscape-level heterogeneity in grassland characteristics, such as soil-based variation in biomass and species composition, may contribute to variation in the effects of fire or grazing....
