The possible role of protein kinase C in the regulation of glucose transport in the rat adipose cell has been examined. Both insulin and phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA) stimulate 3-O-methylglucose transport in the intact cell ein association with the subcellular redistribution of glucose transporters from the low density microsomes to the plasma membranes, as assessed by cytochalasin B bi...

The tumor-promoting phorbol diester 4 beta-phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA) inhibited mobilization of intracellular Ca2+ in platelets by thrombin (also trypsin and 1-O-alkyl-2-acetyl-sn-glyceryl-3-phosphocholine). PMA was effective over the same concentration range that activates protein kinase C in intact platelets; IC50 vs. thrombin = 2 ng/ml, 3.4 nM: greater than 90% inhibition at 10-20...

OBJECTIVES Comparison of the suitability of two minor urinary metabolites of benzene, trans,trans-muconic acid (tt-MA) and S-phenylmercapturic acid (S-PMA), as biomarkers for low levels of benzene exposure. METHODS The sensitivity of analytical methods of measuring tt-MA and S-PMA were improved and applied to 434 urine samples collected from 188 workers in 12 studies in different petrochemica...

Propidium monoazide (PMA) and ethidium monoazide were used for enumeration of viable Listeria monocytogenes cells in the presence of dead cells. PMA had no antimicrobial effect on L. monocytogenes. Viable cell counts were linearly related to real-time PCR threshold cycle values for PMA-treated cells from planktonic and biofilm sources over a 4-log range.

Background: Leukemia is a malignant proliferative disorder of the hematopoietic cells. The important role of angiogenesis in leukemia has been reported by several studies. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are a large group of endopeptidases which degredate the extracellular matrix and play an important role in angiogenesis. Objective: The present study was conducted to evaluate the patterns of ...

BACKGROUND Polymalic acid (PMA) is a novel polyester polymer that has been broadly used in the medical and food industries. Its monomer, L-malic acid, is also a potential C4 platform chemical. However, little is known about the mechanism of PMA biosynthesis in the yeast-like fungus, Aureobasidium pullulans. In this study, the effects of different nitrogen concentration on cell growth and PMA bi...

Ethidium monoazide (EMA) and propidium monoazide (PMA) have been utilized for selective PCR amplification of DNA from viable bacterial cells. In this study, we compared the abilities of EMA and PMA, together with real-time PCR, to specifically distinguish dead Legionella cells from viable cells. Several experiments showed that PMA or EMA treatment could specifically prevent the PCR amplificatio...

Daily transpiration rate was decreased by low soil moisture, phenylmercuric acetate (PMA) in combination with kaolinite, Mobileaf (a filmforming wax emulsion manufactured by the Mobil Oil Co.), PMA alone, and kaolinite alone in this order. At high soil moisture, dry matter was decreased by PMA but was increased by Mobileaf and by PMA + kaolinite combination. At low soil moisture, dry matter was...

The population migration algorithm (PMA) is a simulation of a population of the intelligent algorithm. Given the prematurity and low precision of PMA, this paper introduces a local search mechanism of the leap-frog algorithm and crossover operator to improve the PMA search speed and global convergence properties. The typical test function verifies the improved algorithm through its performance....

Several studies have suggested that murine and human keratinocytes respond differently to phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA). Using an in vitro assay, we found that in contrast to its effect on murine skin, PMA did not induce ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) activity in human skin biopsies. To explore the signalling induced by PMA and to determine whether an in vitro culture system could be use...
