The effects of acid concentration, reaction time, and temperature in a microwave reactor on recovery of CCA-treated wood were evaluated. Extraction of copper, chromium, and arsenic metals from chromated copper arsenate (CCA)-treated southern pine wood samples with three different acids (i.e., acetic acid, oxalic acid, and phosphoric acid) was investigated using in microwave reactor. Oxalic acid...

The electrical performance of graphene synthesized by chemical vapor deposition and transferred to insulating surfaces may be compromised by extended defects, including for instance grain boundaries, cracks, wrinkles, and tears. In this study, we experimentally investigate and compare the nano- and microscale electrical continuity of single layer graphene grown on centimeter-sized single crysta...

Besides the use of chelating agents, aiming to produce a rise in cupruresis, a decrease of the positive copper balance in hepatolenticular degeneration has been attempted by means of lowering copper absorption. To this end cation exchange resins and potassium sulphide have been used. Nevertheless, the effectiveness of these drugs is still discussed, some investigators being sceptical (Denny-Bro...

High-affinity cellular copper uptake is mediated by the CTR (copper transporter) 1 family of proteins. The highly homologous hCTR (human CTR) 2 protein has been identified, but its function in copper uptake is currently unknown. To characterize the role of hCTR2 in copper homoeostasis, epitope-tagged hCTR2 was transiently expressed in different cell lines. hCTR2-vsvG (vesicular-stomatitis-virus...

This study evaluates the effects of different additives such as silver ion, medium and energy sources on the efficiency of mixed moderate thermophilic bioleaching approach to extract Cu, Mo and Re from molybdenite concentrate containing 0.98% Cu, 1.56% Fe, 53.84% Mo, and 0.055% Re. Molybdenite was the major phase of Mo-bearing mineral and chalcopyrite, covellite and pyrite were distinguished as...

The biuret method offers some advantages as a simple, rapid photometric method for the determination of proteins. In the methods which have been proposed, precipitation of cupric hydroxide gives rise to certain difficulties (1, 2). It occurred to us that the precipitates might be avoided by the addition of a reagent which would form a compound with copper which was soluble in alkali, but of suc...

The suitability of two polychaete worms, Australonereis ehlersi and Nephtys australiensis, and three bivalves, Mysella anomala, Tellina deltoidalis, and Soletellina alba, were assessed for their potential use in whole-sediment toxicity tests. All species except A. ehlersi, which could not be tested because of poor survival in water-only tests, survived in salinities ranging from 18 per thousand...

BACKGROUND Mutations in SCO2 cause cytochrome c oxidase deficiency (COX) and a fatal infantile cardioencephalomyopathy. SCO2 encodes a protein involved in COX copper metabolism; supplementation with copper salts rescues the defect in patients' cells. Bezafibrate (BZF), an approved hypolipidemic agent, ameliorates the COX deficiency in mice with mutations in COX10, another COX-assembly gene. M...

Chalcocite (Cu2S) has been deposited via pulsed chemical vapor deposition (PCVD) into a porous TiO2 matrix using hydrogen sulfide and a metal-organic precursor. The precursor used is similar to the more common Cu(hfac)(tmvs) precursor, but it is fluorine free and exhibits increased thermal stability. The simultaneous exposure of the substrate to the copper precursor and hydrogen sulfide resulte...

The soluble copper silicate (CS) MIC of 100 strains of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and 100 strains of methicillin-susceptible S. aureus (MSSA) was 175 mg Cu/liter. Bactericidal and postantibiotic effects (> or =1 h) were seen at 2x MIC and 4x MIC. The frequency of mutation was <10(-9), and serial passage could not extend growth beyond 1.6x MIC.
