Investigation of an outbreak of tuberculosis (TB) in a primary school in Milan, Italy, found 15 schoolchildren had active TB disease and 173 had latent TB infection. TB was also identified in 2 homeless men near the school. Diagnostic delay, particularly in the index case-patient, contributed to the transmission of infection.

Parathyroid hormone-related protein (PTHrP) has a number of cancer-related actions. While best known for causing hypercalcemia of malignancy, it also has effects on cancer cell growth, apoptosis, and angiogenesis. Studying the actions of PTHrP in human cancer is complicated because there are three isoforms and many derived peptides. Several peptides are biologically active at known or presumed ...

Abstract In the present study, a commercial chitosan soluble in acid solution and obtained from shrimp shell waste, with molecular weight of 173 kDa degree acetylation 17%, named as (173/17), was investigated. Chitosan is well-known biopolymer whose antimicrobial properties are highly influenced by weight, well preparation derivatization methods used. (173/17) applied on grapevine leaves before...

Heme-binding protein 23 kDa (HBP23), a rat isoform of human proliferation-associated gene product (PAG), is a member of the peroxiredoxin family of peroxidases, having two conserved cysteine residues. Recent biochemical studies have shown that HBP23/PAG is an oxidative stress-induced and proliferation-coupled multifunctional protein that exhibits specific bindings to c-Abl protein tyrosine kina...

Mitochondrial uncoupling protein (UcP) contains two tryptophans buried in transmembrane alpha-helices: Trp-173 at the matrix end of fourth alpha-helix and Trp-280 on the sixth alpha-helix. However, the steady-state emission of isolated UcP exhibited properties unusual for alpha-helices: maximum close to that of free tryptophan emission and low quantum yield of 0.04. The former suggests prevaili...
