This paper examines potential acoustic cues for level of formality in Japanese conversational speech using speech data gathered outside the laboratory, with the objective of using any significant cues to develop a model to predict level of formality in spoken Japanese. Based on previous work on the phonetic properties of formality in Japanese [1],[2] and other languages [3], and on a pilot stud...

Sweep frequency measurements of the transfer function of nasals and nasalized vowels have been found to show a more complex pole-zero pattern than can be predicted with a traditional model of the nasal tract which consists of two parallel tubes coupled to the oral cavities. In this paper, we put forward the hypothesis that the more complex transfer function can be explained with reference to th...

Ultrasonic velocities, densities and porosities for a set of coal and surrounding silty coal, silty shale, and shaly coal samples were measured in laboratory. The pressure effect, temperature effect, and saturation effect on velocities and anisotropy were evaluated. The results were compared and correlated with the well log data and discrepancies were analyzed. The potential influences of the c...

Mechanical phenotyping of single cells is an emerging tool for cell classification, enabling assessment of effective parameters relating to cells' interior molecular content and structure. Here, we present iso-acoustic focusing, an equilibrium method to analyze the effective acoustic impedance of single cells in continuous flow. While flowing through a microchannel, cells migrate sideways, infl...

A major high-frequency sediment acoustics experiment was conducted in shallow waters of the northeastern Gulf of Mexico. The experiment addressed high-frequency acoustic backscattering from the seafloor, acoustic penetration into the seafloor, and acoustic propagation within the seafloor. Extensive in situ measurements were made of the sediment geophysical properties and of the biological and h...

The US Navy has been developing its Multi-Static Active Coherent (MAC) acoustic search system. MAC is an air launched acoustic search system that combines a newly developed coherent source sonobuoy with a field of receiver sonobuoys. With the introduction of the coherent source, operational search data collected during MAC exercises are well suited for post-processing to infer waveguide propert...

Highly reduced pronunciation variants, such as something like ‘yeshay’ for yesterday, are abundant in conversational speech. Previous research has shown that listeners understand such pronunciation variants only in their sentential contexts. This study further investigates the roles of the acoustic properties of reduced words themselves and of semantic/syntactic and acoustic information in thei...

In this study we model the sound attenuation properties of a hearing aid earmold tube. The model includes thermoviscous acoustic effects and it couples structural vibrations to the external acoustic field. Moreover, the finite element domain is coupled at two boundaries with an electroacoustic model of a hearing aid and an acoustic 2-cc coupler.

This paper describes the acoustic properties of a range of epoxy resins prepared by photocuring that are suitable for application in piezoelectric ultrasonic transducer matching layers. Materials, based on blends of diglycidyl ether of Bisphenol A and 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol diglycidyl ether, are described. Furthermore, in order to vary the elastic character of the base resin, samples contain...
