Tinea versicolor is caused by Malassezia furfur and presents as hypo or hyper-pigmented coalescing scaly macules on the trunk and upper arms. Sites of predilection are the sternal region and the sides of the chest, the abdomen, back, pubis, neck, and intertriginous areas. We report a case of tinea versicolor with a reticulated pattern on acral sites.
PURPOSE We recently identified a KIT exon 11 mutation in an anorectal melanoma of a patient who had an excellent response to treatment with imatinib. To determine the frequency of KIT mutations across melanoma subtypes, we surveyed a large series of tumors. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN One hundred eighty-nine melanomas were screened for mutations in KIT exons 11, 13, and 17. KIT copy number was assess...
Darier disease is an autosomal-dominant inherited condition caused by mutation of a gene, which produces a protein involved in calcium channel regulation. The disease has a variety of manifestations and lacks consistent genotype-phenotype correlations. Acral hemorrhagic Darier disease causes macules, papules, vesicles and/or hemorrhagic blisters on the extremities. Other classic signs of the di...
Purpose: KIT aberrations were described in acral and mucosal melanomas in largely Caucasian populations. Asian populations are more prone to develop acral and mucosal than cutaneous melanomas, and may harbor a high frequency of KIT aberrations. Experimental Design: Melanoma subtypes (n 1⁄4 502) were analyzed histologically to determine melanoma subtype. Tissue samples were analyzed for mutation...
C utaneous malignant melanoma (MM) falls into two main groups, based on aetiology [1–3]. First, a small minority of patients have acral MM, in which the disease occurs on the palms and soles. The incidence of acral MM is similar in people with widely different skin colours (and hence with different amounts of skin melanin), and at different latitudes. The palms and soles have a thick epidermis,...
High-dose interferon alfa-2b (IFN-α-2b) improves the survival of patients with high-risk melanoma. We aimed to identify baseline peripheral blood biomarkers to predict the outcome of acral melanoma patients treated with IFN-α-2b. Pretreatment baseline parameters and clinical data were assessed in 226 patients with acral melanoma. Relapse-free survival (RFS) and overall survival (OS) were assess...
BACKGROUND Because body weight-bearing produces a shift in the horny layer, acral melanocytic nevus on the body weight-bearing area of the sole showed a regular fibrillar pattern (FP) due to slanting of the melanin columns in the horny layer. On the other hand, acral lentiginous melanoma (ALM) on the body weight-bearing area of the sole tended to show irregular fibrillar pattern showing rather ...
of both lower limbs11; and 1 report described concomitant involvement of the surgical scar of an adenoma of the breast.6 Analysis of all published cases of acral syringomas highlights a number of specific features (Table 2). First, the numbers of women and men were very similar (7 women versus 5 men) and the patients were older (between 28 and 70 years) than has usually reported for these tumor...
