[1] The Leeuwin Current, a warm, poleward flowing eastern boundary current, dominates the surface circulation off the west coast of Australia and has profound influence on regional marine ecosystem and fisheries recruitment. In this study, the seasonal and interannual variations of upper ocean heat balance in the Leeuwin Current region are analyzed by using an eddy-resolving numerical model sim...

Electrokinetic extraction is an emerging technology that can be used to remove contaminants from heterogeneous fine-grained soils in situ. Contaminants in the subsurface are removed by the application of a direct-current electric field across the contaminated soil. The primary contaminant transport and removal mechanisms are electroosmotic advection and ionic migration. However, there are many ...

Radiatively inefficient (or advection dominated) disks are discussed at an introductory level. Ion supported and radiation supported flows are discussed, the different consequences of advection dominated flows onto black holes vs. solid surfaces (neutron stars, white dwarfs), hydrodynamics, the role of the ratio of specific heats, and the possible connection between ADAFs and outflows.

We design a perfectly matched layer for the advection-diffusion equation. We show that the reflection coefficient is exponentially small with respect to the damping parameter and the width of the PML and this independently of the advection and of the viscosity. Numerical tests assess the efficiency of the approach.

The equivalence of the discretized equations resulting from both uctuation splitting and nite volume schemes is demonstrated in one dimension. Scalar equations are considered for advection, di usion, and combined advection/diffusion. Analysis of systems is performed for the Euler and Navier-Stokes equations of gas dynamics. Non-uniform mesh-point distributions are included in the analyses.

Tracer-particles, massless particles that are advected throughout the flow domain, are an important factor in computational solutions. The utility of tracer-particles, which sample and report relevant solution data, is predicated upon an accurate advection algorithm. The objective of this research was to investigate the ability of existing techniques, physical-space and logical-space advection,...

Consider a fluid occupying a domain D with boundary aD, in twoor three-dimensional space. The fluid in a subdomain D, CD is burned, the fluid in D, = D D, is unburned, and the boundary SD, between D, and D, is transported by the velocity of the fluid and also moves with a velocity U in the direction of its own normal; D1 is expanding while D, is contracting. U is the flame speed, and may depend...

We present a Lagrangian—Eulerian method with adaptively local ZOOMing and Peak/valley Capturing approach (LEZOOMPC), consisting of advection—diffusion decoupling, backward particle tracking, forward particle tracking, adaptively local zooming, peak/valley capturing, and slave point utilization, to solve three-dimensional advection—diffusion transport equations. This approach and the associated ...

Segregation of granular materials composed of different-sized particles has important repercussions in various industrial processes and natural phenomena, but predicting size segregation remains a challenging problem. To address this problem, we have developed a theoretical model that captures the interplay between advection, segregation, and diffusion in size bidisperse granular materials. The...
