asthma is a heterogeneous disease, in which asthmatic patients present with different clinical phenotypes, variable endotypes, and different response to asthma medicines. thus, we are faced with an asthma paradox; asthma is diagnosed subjectively by clinical history and treated with biologically active drugs. to solve this paradox, we need objective airway biomarkers to tailor the proper medica...

Cephalometric studies show significant gender differences in the size of the pharyngeal airway space. This study aimed to investigate and compare morphologic changes after mandibular setback or two-jaws surgery on the pharyngeal airway in men and women using computed tomography (CT). The sample included 34 women and 13 men diagnosed with Class III skeletal deformities, who had been treated by m...

BACKGROUND Recognition of the difficult airway is a critical element of emergency practice. Mallampati score and body mass index (BMI) are not always predictive and they may be unavailable in critically ill patients. Ultrasonography provides high-resolution images that are rapidly obtainable, mobile, and non-invasive. Studies have shown correlation of ultrasound measurements with difficult lary...

Lateral pharyngeal fat pad compression of the upper airway (UA) wall is thought to influence UA size in patients with obstructive sleep apnea. We examined interactions between acute mass/volume loading of the UA extra-luminal tissue space and UA patency. We studied 12 supine, anesthetized, spontaneously breathing, head position-controlled (50 degrees ), New Zealand White rabbits. Submucosal ext...

AIMS To assess the effects of two-phase treatment with the Herbst and the preadjusted edgewise appliances on upper airway dimensions and to investigate the correlation between changes in the upper airway dimensions and skeletal morphologies. METHODS A total of 27 Chinese male adolescents aged 12.8 ± 1.3 years were selected. Lateral cephalograms were collected to assess the skeletal morphology...
