Background It is estimated that 2-3% of the adult population worldwide has 1 or more food allergies, but approximately 20% of the population avoids certain foods because of a perceived food allergy. We aim to describe the characteristics, implicated foods and final allergy diagnosis among adult patients with suspected adverse reactions to foods and to compare food allergic reactions (AR) and no...

Honey allergy is a very rare, but serious health condition. In this study, we presented 1 patient who had anaphylaxis after the honey allergological investigation with skin prick-prick test with honey. Honey as a food has been associated to allergic reactions and as the increased consumption of honey in health food may increase the incidence of honey-related allergic reactions.

This new regular feature will be focusing on the different methodologies used in the diagnosis of allergies, describing current assays and introducing novel approaches. Hypersensitivity reactions can be differentiated into IgEand non-IgE-mediated allergic but also non-allergic reactions. Over the next issues the different in vitro and in vivo diagnostic assays will be explained and the advantag...

Antivenom is the most effective method currently available for the treatment of poisonous snake bite. Allergic reactions to antivenom have been reported in the past. Here we shared a case of allergic reactions to antivenom in an old male patient who was bitten twice by the same snake (probably same one) at the same biting site within a month whereas the patient did not show any allergic disorde...

The prevalence of allergic diseases has increased tremendously over the last decades. Clinically they comprise a spectrum of many different conditions caused by specific immunological hypersensitivity in response to a mostly apathogenic substance. Environmental factors such as lack of immune-stimulating contacts (infection, vaccination) and exposure to allergy-enhancing anthropogenic pollutants...

The mast cell-mediated allergic reactions are involved in many allergic diseases, such as asthma, allergic rhinitis and sinusitis. Stimulation of mast cells initiates the process of degranulation, resulting in the release of mediators such as histamine and an array of inflammatory cytokines. In this report, we investigated the effect of gossypin (a biflavonoid) and suramin (a synthetic polysulp...

BACKGROUND The diagnosis of acute life-threatening allergic reactions during anesthesia relies on clinical signs, histamine and/or tryptase measurements, and allergic testing. In patients who die after the reaction, skin tests cannot be performed, and the effect of resuscitation manoeuvres on mediator concentrations is unknown. The authors compared plasma histamine and tryptase concentrations i...

Adverse Drug Reactions (ADRs) and drug allergies- as a subset of ADRs- make a significant public health concern, complicating 5 to 15% of therapeutic drug courses. They may result in diminished quality of life, increased physician visits, health care costs, hospitalizations, and even death. The incidence of serious ADRs in hospitalized patients was estimated to be 6.7% and for fatal ADRs to be ...
