During the spring of 1996, an estimated 581,395 Ehrlichia-infected ticks were imported into Sweden by migrating birds. Ehrlichia gene sequences found in ticks collected from these migrating birds were identical to those of granulocytic ehrlichiosis found in domestic animals and humans in Sweden. These findings support the idea that birds may play a role in dispersing Ehrlichia.
High fearfulness could disrupt learning and likely affects judgment in animals, especially when it is part of an animals' personality, i.e., trait anxiety. Here, we tested whether high fearfulness affects discrimination learning and judgment bias (JB) in laying hens. Based on the response to an open field at 5 weeks of age, birds were categorized as fearful (FC) by showing no walking or vocaliz...
Pending changes in European legislation ban the use of wild-caught animals in research. This change is partly justified on the assumption that captive-breeding (or hand-rearing) increases welfare of captive animals because these practices result in animals with reduced fear of humans. However, there are few actual data on the long-term behavioural effects of captive-breeding in non-domestic spe...

Abstract Agricultural landscapes had been inhabited by a vast number of bird species in the past; however, especially last decades, agricultural intensification negatively affected habitat composition. Habitat heterogeneity decreased and many inhabiting farmland has severely declined. These still offer home for species, but with decreasing environmental variability, less suitable might be avail...
Studies have emphasized the importance of wild birds in the transmission of pathogenic microorganisms to other animals, whether wild or industrial birds, as well as in humans. Among these microorganisms, Salmonella spp. has shown relevant importance. Sousa et al. (2010a) captured 48 wild birds near poultry facilities in the North of São Paulo city, Brazil and detected three birds positive for S...

In our country, animals mostly bred rural areas. quality ecological purity their products is better than that grown specialized farms poultry farms. Since, areas, local traditional methods used to treat livesto...
The dynamics of a wild red-legged partridge population were examined over a 14-year period in Spain to identify patterns in age and sex ratios in relation to weather parameters, and to assess the importance of these parameters in population dynamics and management. The results gave age ratios of 1.07 (but 2.13 in July counts), juvenile sex ratios of 1.01 and adult sex ratios of 1.47. Overall, 1...
Plants with floral resources are advocated to enhance natural enemy density and efficacy in conservation biological control systems. Field experiments were conducted examine the ability of partridge pea (Chamaecrista fasciculata) planted along two borders organic field corn (Zea mays) plots attract enemies control, yield profit. Partridge significantly increased abundances, including parasitoid...
