Anthraquinone derived oxalamide gelator 1 forms with aromatic solvents and alcohols very stable gels which selectively respond to the presence of fluoride anion by colour change and/or gel-to-sol transition.

Chinese herbal medicine preparations are widely available and often regarded by the public as natural and safe remedies for a variety of medical conditions. Nephropathy caused by Chinese herbs has previously been reported, usually involving the use of aristolochic acids. We report a 23-year-old woman who developed acute renal failure following prolonged use of a proprietary Chinese herbal slimm...

The covalent linking of acceptor molecules to electron donating conjugated polymer is an approach for the development of new photoactive materials for the fabrication of organic photoelectric conversion devices. With this strategy we have designed a polyalkylthiophene copolymer series containing in the side chain anthraquinone molecules as electron acceptor. The peculiar features of the copolym...

Carboxydothermus hydrogenoformans is able to grow by conversion of CO to H2 and CO2. Besides CO, only pyruvate was described as serving as an energy source. Based on 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity, C. hydrogenoformans is closely related to Thermoterrabacterium ferrireducens. T. ferrireducens is like C. hydrogenoformans a gram-positive, thermophilic, strict anaerobic bacterium. However, it is...

In this paper, we demonstrate a novel carbon nanotube (CNT) reinforced macroporous adsorption resin (MAR) for the first time. The CNTs were dispersed in water via sonication, and then in situ physically entrapped in the pores of MAR by capillary forces and sonication. The resulting CNT reinforced MAR (CNT-MAR) was proved by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and confocal laser scanning micr...

The formation and stability of alkali metal complexes with crown ethers containing an anthraquinone unit has been investigated in methanol and acetonitrile solutions by potentiometric methods. Complexes of 1:1 stoichiometry were observed for all the studied systems; 2:1 complexes were only detected for the larger alkali cations (Rb and Cs) and with the ligand with the larger macrocyclic cavity ...

We report here a series of heteroatom-substituted macrocycles containing an anthraquinone moiety as a fluorescent signaling unit and a cyclic polyheteroether chain as the receptor. Sulfur, selenium, and tellurium derivatives of 1,8-anthraquinone-18-crown-5 (1) were synthesized by reacting sodium sulfide (Na2S), sodium selenide (Na2Se) and sodium telluride (Na2Te) with 1,8-bis(2-bromoethylethyle...

We established callus cultures of the monocotyledonous plants Kniphofia foliosa and K. tuckii (Asphodelaceae), which produce the anthraquinone derivatives chrysophanol and its glycosides. The minor product chrysophanol 8-O-beta-gentiobioside was fully characterized by spectroscopic analysis and synthesis.

Here, we report 5-hydroxy-1,2,3,4,4a,9a-hexahydro-1,4-ethano-9,10-anthraquinone (13), a small molecule generating reactive oxygen species (ROS) in pH 7.4 buffer under ambient aerobic conditions that has selective and potent Mycobacterium tuberculosis growth inhibitory activity.

Long-distance radical cation transport was studied in DNA condensates. Linearized pUC19 plasmid was ligated to an oligomer containing a covalently linked anthraquinone group and six regularly spaced GG steps, which serve as traps for the migrating radical cation. Treatment of the linear, ligated plasmid with spermidine results in formation of condensates that were detected by light scattering a...
