Given a channel and an input process we study the minimum randomness of those input processes whose output statistics approximate the original output statistics with arbitrary accuracy. We introduce the notion of resolvability of a channel, defined as the number of random bits required per channel use in order to generate an input that achieves arbitrarily accurate approximation of the output s...

A keystone in the classical theory of diophantine approximation is the construction of an auxilliary polynomial. The polynomial is constructed so that it is forced (for arithmetic reasons) to vanish at certain approximating points and this contradicts an upper bound on the order of vanishing obtained by other (usually geometric) techniques; the contradiction then allows one to prove finiteness ...

We provide a variable metric stochastic approximation theory. In doing so, we provide a convergence theory for a large class of online variable metric methods including the recently introduced online versions of the BFGS algorithm and its limited-memory LBFGS variant. We also discuss the implications of our results for learning from expert advice.

A set of irregularly distributed points is fitted to a Least-Squares approximating surface constructed as linear combination of wavelets. The construction proceeds adaptively on a coarse-to-fine refinement. We discuss by numerical experiments the efficiency of the method in relation to iterative solution procedures. Furthermore, we present extensions of the method that allow to cope with wrong ...

Approximation theory in the context of probability density function turns out to go beyond the classical idea of orthogonal projection. Special tools have to be designed so as to respect the nonnegativity of the approximate function. We develop here and justify from the theoretical point of view an approximation procedure introduced by Levermore [Levermore, J. Stat. Phys. 83 (1996) 1021–1065] a...

This introductory paper describes the main topics of this special issue, dedicated to Leonardo Traversoni, known at international level as the promoter of the conference series “Multivariate Approximation: Theory and Applications”, to celebrate his 60th birthday.

Periodic progressive waves in shallow to transitional water are described by a Cnoidal Approximation wave theory. The formulation is analytical and largely classical. Periodic waves are assumed, so that the theory does not extend to solitary waves. The solution is completed numerically, as a problem in nonlinear optimisation. The suitability of the theory in shallow to transitional water is dem...

We also discuss the implications of our results in the areas of eliciting properties of distributions using prediction markets a...

In this survey we discuss various approximation-theoretic problems that arise in the multilayer feedforward perceptron (MLP) model in neural networks. The MLP model is one of the more popular and practical of the many neural network models. Mathematically it is also one of the simpler models. Nonetheless the mathematics of this model is not well understood, and many of these problems are approx...

We give a short introduction to some questions in complexity theory and proceed to give some recent developments. In particular, we discuss probabilistically checkable proofs and their applications in establishing inapproximability results. In a traditional proof the proofchecker reads the entire proof and decides deterministically whether the proof is correct. In a probabilistically checkable ...
