Cellular checkpoints prevent damage and mutation accumulation in tissue cells. DNA repair is one mechanism that can be triggered by checkpoints and involves temporary cell cycle arrest and thus delayed reproduction. Repair-deficient cells avoid this delay, which has been argued to lead to a selective advantage in the presence of frequent damage. We investigate this hypothesis with stochastic mo...

In view of the importance of picolinic acid (Pa) in preventing cell growth and arresting cell cycle, attempts were made to design, synthesize and characterize two new Pa based tetradentate ligands (DPPTR and DPPTY) with a modified procedure. The procedure reported here avoids by-products and provides better yield and purity.

Background: In this article, the authors present evidence–based clinical recommendations regarding the use of nonfluoride caries preventive agents. The recommendations were developed by an expert panel convened by the American Dental Association (ADA) Council on Scientific Affairs. The panel addressed several questions regarding the efficacy of non–fluoride agents in reducing the incidence of c...

A novel active zinc substrate-induced sequential self-construction method is presented for the fabrication of hydrated WO(3) hierarchical octahedrons, flakes, lanterns, and arresting sandwiched double-layer nanorods arrays architectures for the first time. Photocatalytic activity and gas sensing properties of the as-obtained various WO(3).0.33H(2)O architectures were studied as well.

Persistent hemorrhage from liver capsular injuries has remained a technical challenge without an optimal solution. This report discusses an easy to use device that is commonly used within elective hepatic surgery and can be successful in arresting ongoing surface and laceration bleeding in patients with solid organ injuries.

Bijels are typically prepared by arresting the phase separation of two liquids using interfacial particles. The surface treatment of the particles is challenging but can be overcome at a cost (Cui et al., Science, 2013, 342, 460-463). Here, we use mixed commercial fumed-silica nanoparticles, giving a facile route to bijel production.

Collapse of (2+1)-dimensional beams in the inhomogeneous two-dimensional cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation is analyzed numerically and analytically. It is shown that in the vicinity of a narrow attractive inhomogeneity, the collapse of beams that in a homogeneous medium would collapse may be arrested under certain circumstances.

The cyclical waves of fever and chills associated with malaria result from the synchronous rupture of infected red blood cells (RBCs) that release swarms of parasites into the bloodstream for subsequent reinvasion and proliferation. Despite the clinical importance of this phase of the malaria parasite life cycle, relatively little is known about the mechanisms used by the parasite to promote RB...

This paper discusses the results from the maintenance evaluation of Engineered Material Arresting System (EMAS) at three U.S. airports: Greenville Downtown Airport (GMU), SC, Roanoke Regional Airport (ROA), VA, and Burbank Airport (BUR), CA. EMAS is a softer ground aircraft arresting system approved by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to stop overrunning aircraft. In numerous occasions...
