A mass immunization campaign with a Urabe-containing measles-mumps-rubella vaccine was carried out in 1997 in the city of Salvador, northeastern Brazil, with a target population of children aged 1-11 years. There was an outbreak of aseptic meningitis following the mass campaign. Cases of aseptic meningitis were ascertained through data collected from the records of children admitted to the loca...

BACKGROUND Aseptic loosening is a main cause for revision surgery after total hip arthroplasty (THA) and there is no reliable marker for the early detection of patients at high risk. This study has been performed to validate association of the T393C polymorphism (rs7121) in the GNAS1 gene, encoding for the alpha-subunit of heterotrimeric G-protein Gs, with risk for and time to aseptic loosening...

BACKGROUND Enterovirus (EV) infections are one of the most common causes of aseptic meningitis in pediatrics. To diagnose EV meningitis, virus isolation in cell cultures is often time consuming and lacks sensitivity to be of clinical relevance. This makes the virus culture results difficult to interpret. The rapid detection of EVs in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) by molecular diagnostic techniques ...

OBJECTIVE Intravenous immunoglobulin is widely used to treat various autoimmune disorders. After observing instances of aseptic meningitis in treated patients, we studied the frequency and associated risk factors for aseptic meningitis in patients treated with high-dose intravenous immunoglobulin. DESIGN Retrospective analysis of a prospective cohort study. SETTING Tertiary research referra...

Mollaret meningitis is characterized by three or more episodes of benign recurrent aseptic meningitis in which symptoms and signs resolve spontaneously within two to five days. Severe headache with an acute onset, fever and meningismus are the main clinical features. We report a case of Mollaret meningitis in a seven-year-old girl who presented with four aseptic meningitis episodes in one year.

Aseptic meningitis can be caused by viruses, drugs, and connective tissue disorders. The most common drugs causing it include antibiotics like trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), intravenous immunoglobulins, intrathecal agents, vaccines, and monoclonal antibodies. A patient who had aseptic meningitis from three different NSAIDs including rofecoxib is p...

We have made a retrospective study of 1001 custom-made prostheses used as replacements after surgery for bone tumours. There were 493 distal femoral, 263 proximal femoral and 245 proximal tibial prostheses. Aseptic loosening was shown to be the principal mode of failure of the implants, and 71 patients had revision for aseptic loosening of a cemented intramedullary stem. The probability of a pa...

OBJECTIVE Genetic factor plays an important role in early failure of total hip arthroplasty (aseptic loosening) etiology, and TIMP-1 gene may be involved. The present study was conducted to reveal possible association between TIMP-1 polymorphisms with the risk of early failure of total hip arthroplasty (THA) (aseptic loosening). METHODS The TIMP-1 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) rs4898...

PURPOSE To compare the medium-term outcome of revision total knee arthroplasty (TKA) for septic versus aseptic failure. METHODS Records of 142 patients who underwent revision TKA by a single senior surgeon for septic (n=65) or aseptic (n=77) failure were reviewed. In the septic group, 67 knees in 42 women and 23 men were included. In the aseptic group, 88 knees in 51 women and 26 men were inc...

BACKGROUND There are many methods for treating femoral shaft aseptic nonunions of which exchange nailing is the simplest technique. However, the reported success rate varies. Therefore, a prospective study was conducted to further clarify the role of exchange nailing. METHODS From October 1994 through December 1999, 40 femoral shaft aseptic nonunions in 39 patients were treated using exchange...
