Recently, the importance of single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) has been stressed. The discovery of the disease-related gene can disclose disease susceptible or resistant persons, such as noted in persons resistant to AIDSvirus infection. Genetic polymorphism is also important in drug-responsiveness, and also in the occurrence of severe side effects in each patient. Azathioprine is one of the ...

A patient with rheumatoid arthritis developed hepatic veno-occlusive disease following the use of azathioprine. Although azathioprine induced veno-occlusive disease is suspected to occur more frequently in patients with autoimmune dysfunction, it has not previously been reported as a complication of treatment in rheumatoid arthritis. The mechanism responsible for this condition remains unknown.

Hepatic ornithine decarboxylase and aniline hydroxylase activities increased as early as 6h after a single dosing of azathioprine tomale rats and reached maximum levels at the 12th h after the treatment. However, aniline hydroxylase activity dropped to levels mu lower than the cintrols 48 h following azathioprine treatment. The results are discussed with regard to the role of azqathioprine duri...

BACKGROUND Maintenance therapy, often with azathioprine or mycophenolate mofetil, is required to consolidate remission and prevent relapse after the initial control of lupus nephritis. METHODS We carried out a 36-month, randomized, double-blind, double-dummy, phase 3 study comparing oral mycophenolate mofetil (2 g per day) and oral azathioprine (2 mg per kilogram of body weight per day), plus...

Four patients with idiopathic membranous glomerulonephritis, heavy proteinuria and progressive renal failure received azathioprine and prednisolone. Renal function improved in all four and proteinuria declined sharply in three. We suggest that treatment with azathioprine and prednisolone may be of benefit in this form of idiopathic membranous glomerulonephritis.

We report a case of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) primo infection with the development of successive infectious mononucleosis, hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis, and B-cell lymphoproliferative disorder in a patient treated with azathioprine for Crohn's disease. This case report suggests that specific EBV-related clinical and virological management should be considered when treating a patient with i...

Cyclophosphamide significantly diminished the canine humoral antibody response to sheep red blood cells and tended to prevent arterial lesions in renal homografts. However, cyclophosphamide failed to prolong renal homograft survival when administered to dogs as the sole immunosuppressive agent, and it did not add to the effectiveness of azathioprine when given as a supplement to the azathioprin...

A successful pregnancy following renal allotransplantation is reported. Until now azathioprine has been used as the standard immunosuppressive agent in such cases. Because of the potential teratogenicity of azathioprine, low doses of cyclosporin A, a new immunosuppressive drug, was used in our pregnant recipient. We present the management and the outcome of the pregnancy, as well as the hormona...
