General primer-mediated ribosomal DNA amplification during endophthalmitis may improve the quality of diagnostic microbiology. However, extreme care needs to be taken not to introduce contaminating bacterial DNA during surgery procedures. The use of decontaminating iodine solutions can lead to such contamination due to the presence of DNA from Pseudomonas-like organisms.
We report our recent experience with four cases of endophthalmitis (one male, three females) after 25-gauge pars plana vitrectomy (PPV). One was a case of persistent cystoid macular edema caused by branch retinal vein occlusion, whereas the remaining three were cases of epiretinal membrane. Preoperative antibiotics before the first PPV procedure were not administered in three of the four cases....
We present three unrelated post-cataract surgery endophthalmitis cases caused by Rhizobium radiobacter, hospitalized in three different hospitals. Early diagnosis was obtained in two cases by bacterial DNA detection in vitreous samples. All patients recovered from infection, but pars plana vitrectomy was needed in two patients due to rapid clinical deterioration.
BACKGROUND Capsule and pneumolysin (PLY) are two major virulence factors of Streptococcus pneumoniae. S. pneumoniae is one of the leading causes of bacterial endophthalmitis. The aim of this study is to determine whether passive immunization with the 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (Pneumovax® 23; PPSV23) or PLY protects against pneumococcal endophthalmitis. METHODS New Zealand ...
BACKGROUND To report our 3-year experience of 23-gauge transconjunctival sutureless vitrectomy (TSV) for acute postoperative endophthalmitis at a tertiary referral center in southern Taiwan. METHODS This retrospective chart review study included 19 patients with acute postoperative endophthalmitis who underwent 23-gauge TSV from January 2011 to January 2015 at Kaohsiung Veterans General Hospi...
PURPOSE The authors studied the role of the complement system in host defense against Staphylococcus epidermidis and S. aureus endophthalmitis. METHODS Guinea pigs in the S. epidermidis model received an intravitreal injection of 7000 viable organisms, and guinea pigs in the S. aureus model received 50 viable organisms. The experimental animals in each model were decomplemented with intraperi...
