A 1 2-yr-old boy with acute leukemia was globulin were found in the patient’s serum found to have paraproteinemia and Benceand urine. Electron microscopic and imJones proteinuria. The paraprotein was munofluorescence studies provided cvicharacterized as immunoglobulin M, type i dence of the presence of lymphoid leukemia and the Bence Jones protein as free cells apparently responsible for the pr...

Plasma cell disorders are important in the differential diagnosis of acute kidney injury and of renal impairment with proteinuria. One or more of several mechanisms can be involved, such as cast nephropathy, deposition of monoclonal immunoglobulins, formation of amyloid fibrils, hypercalcaemia, hyperuricaemia and a variety of tubular syndromes. Various tests, such as serum electrophoresis and i...

The story of this epoch-making discovery as it unfolded in the 1840s has some similarity to a modern day clinical pathology conference. The place is the St. George’s Hospital in London and the participants are Dr. William MacIntyre (dates unknown), Dr. Henry Bence Jones (1814-1873), and Dr. John Dalrymple (1804-1852). A gravely ill patient of Dr. MacIntyre’s was admitted to the hospital with va...

The development by Smithies (1955a) of starch gel as a medium for the electrophoresis of protein material marked an important advance, as it combines separation by electrical mobility with a form of pore filtration. Smithies (1955b) has been able to obtain 12 or more protein fractions from human serum with his one-dimensional technique and equally remarkable separation has been obtained with an...

We introduce the Farrell-Jones Conjecture with coefficients in an additive category with G-action. This is a variant of the Farrell-Jones Conjecture about the algebraic Kor L-Theory of a group ring RG. It allows to treat twisted group rings and crossed product rings. The conjecture with coefficients is stronger than the original conjecture but it has better inheritance properties. Since known p...

A case is described of a 59-year-old woman presenting with multiple renal tubular defects. The aminoaciduria was of a generalized type. When investigated initially the only feature of myelomatosis was urinary Bence-Jones protein. Two years later radiologically classical multiple myelomatosis developed and rapidly progressed to the patient's death nine months later.

Studies in this and in other laboratories have been concerned with the chemical composition of immunoglobulin light polypeptide chains and with the genetic significance of the chemical evidence. Many recent investigations have been devoted to the comparison of amino acid sequences of Bence-Jones proteins of manl-3 and mouse.4-6 These polypeptide chains are about 214 residues in length and consi...

Jones & Love (J&L) should have given more attention to Agnostic uses of Bayesian methods for the statistical analysis of models and data. Reliance on the frequentist analysis of Bayesian models has retarded their development and prevented their full evaluation. The Ecumenical integration of Bayesian statistics to analyze Bayesian models offers a better way to test their inferential and predictive
