The editors introduce the Biomedical Optics Express feature issue on "Phantoms for the Performance Evaluation and Validation of Optical Medical Imaging Devices." In this talk I will review recent work on related inverse scattering problems for the Boltzmann transport equation and fast image reconstruction algorithms for large data sets. Numerical simulations and experiments in model systems are used to illustrate the results.
