首都圏中央連絡自動車道あきる野インターチェンジ（略称：IC）では，調整池を活用した「あきる野ICビオトープ」が整備されている。このビオトープは，整備後17年間に亘り継続的なモニタリング調査を実施し，その結果に基づいた順応的管理を実践してきた。また，高速道路の緑地資産を地域に還元するために，地域連携・環境教育の場としての活用策を模索し，地元小学校の児童を対象とした自然観察会を開催した。こうした一連の取り組みは，グリーンインフラの概念を体現したものであり，持続可能で魅力あるビオトープの形成に寄与するものと考えられた。
