The development and progression of bladder pain syndrome/interstitial cystitis (BPS/IC) is closely related to bladder inflammation. Intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM-1) is associated with bladder inflammation in BPS/IC. We investigated the effect of specific inhibition of ICAM-1 using an anti-ICAM-1 antibody (AIA) on bladder inflammation in a rat model of severe non-bacterial cystitis (NB...

Hemorrhagic cystitis is a rare complication following radiotherapy for intrapelvic cancer types, including cervical cancer, bladder cancer and prostate cancer. The severity of hemorrhagic cystitis is different in each case, although symptoms improve spontaneously in certain cases, and often significant morbidity requiring numerous interventions occurs. Since no treatment strategy exists with hi...

PURPOSE Interstitial cystitis is a chronic inflammatory disease of the bladder and luminal nitric oxide has been shown to be increased in the bladder in patients with interstitial cystitis. We analyzed endogenous nitric oxide formation and inducible nitric oxide synthase gene expression in the bladder of patients with interstitial cystitis to obtain further knowledge of the localization of indu...

In ̄ammation of the bladder is a common disease mainly affecting women. Patients may complain of suprapubic pain, urinary frequency and urgency with or without haematuria on repeated occasions. In many cases, urine analysis reveals white and red blood cells, while a positive bacteriological culture will con®rm an infectious cause of the cystitis. However, if the culture is negative, with or with...

One of the rarest tumors involving the urinary bladder is the pheochromocytoma. A case of pheochromocytoma of the urinary bladder in a young female suffering from headache and cystitis for many years is reported. Twenty-four hour urine VMA was normal. The patient was never hypertensive except during surgical manipulation of the tumor. Biopsy of the bladder resulted in massive hemorrhage.

Cyclophosphamide (CYP)-induced cystitis alters micturition function and produces reorganization of the micturition reflex. This reorganization may involve cytokine expression in the urinary bladder. These studies have determined candidate cytokines in the bladder that may contribute to the reorganization process. An RNase protection assay was used to measure changes in rat bladder cytokine mRNA...

Interstitial cystitis/painful bladder syndrome is a disease seen mostly in women, and symptoms tend to be worse premenopausally or during ovulation. The four cardinal symptoms of interstitial cystitis/painful bladder syndrome are bladder pain, urgency, frequency, and nocturia. Estrogen has been implicated in the etiology of this disease, but the role of the two estrogen receptors (ER), ERalpha ...

The pathophysiology of interstitial cystitis/painful bladder syndrome (IC/PBS) is enigmatic. Autoimmunity and impaired urothelium might lead the underlying pathology. A major shortcoming in IC/PBS research has been the lack of an appropriate animal model. In this study, we show that the bladder specific uroplakin 3A-derived immunogenic peptide UPK3A 65-84, which contains the binding motif for I...

Interstitial cystitis (IC), often referred to in combination with painful bladder syndrome, is a chronic inflammatory disease of the bladder. Current therapies primarily focus on replenishing urothelial glycosaminoglycan (GAG) layer using GAG analogs and managing pain with supportive therapies. However, the elusive etiology of IC and the lack of animal models to study the disease have been majo...

OBJECTIVES Because the term "interstitial cystitis" (IC) has different meanings in different centers and different parts of the world, the European Society for the Study of Interstitial Cystitis (ESSIC) has worked to create a consensus on definitions, diagnosis, and classification in an attempt to overcome the lack of international agreement on various aspects of IC. METHODS ESSIC has discuss...
