We suggest a novel approach to soliton control and routing based on Bloch-wave filtering in periodic photonic structures. Taking a binary waveguide array as an example, we demonstrate that spatial solitons that belong to different spectral gaps can be selectively reflected from or transmitted through an engineered defect, which acts as a low- or high-pass filter for Bloch waves.

We introduce a geometric condition of Bloch type which guarantees that a subset of a bounded convex domain in several complex variables is degenerate with respect to every iterated function system. Furthermore we discuss the relations of such a Bloch type condition with the analogous hyperbolic Lipschitz condition.

We consider n-level quantum systems and show how the length of the generalized Bloch vector is related to the eigenvalues of the density matrix. We interpret the length of the generalized Bloch vector as a measure of how pure the quantum state is.

We derive radiative transport equations for solutions of a Schrodinger equation in a periodic structure with small random inhomogeneities. We use systematically the Wigner transform and the Bloch wave expansion. The streaming part of the radiative transport equations is determined entirely by the Bloch spectrum, while the scattering part by the random uctuations.

It is shown that at low temperatures, quantum oscillations of nanoscale structural inhomogeneities (the vertical Bloch line and the Bloch point) occur in the domain walls of cylindrical magnetic domains formed in a uniaxial magnetic film with strong magnetic anisotropy. The conditions for the excitation of these oscillations are determined.

We present a unitary equivalent spin-boson Hamiltonian in which terms can be identified which contribute to the Bloch-Siegert shift, and to the level splittings at the anticrossings associated with the Bloch-Siegert resonances. First-order degenerate perturbation theory is used to develop approximate results in the case of moderate coupling for the level splitting.
