A numerical study of the elastic-plastic mode-II fracture of adhesive joints is presented in this paper. A traction-separation law was used to simulate the mode-II interfacial fracture of adhesively-bonded end-notched flexure (E.N.F.) specimens loaded in three-point bending, with extensive plastic deformation accompanying failure. The fracture parameters for the traction-separation law were det...

The Mode I and II Interlaminar Fracture Toughness (IFT) of Vectran/Epoxy composite material were investigated using the Double Cantilever Beam (DCB) 4 End Notched Flexure (4ENF) methods, respectively. Due to relatively low compressive strength Vectran (<10% its tensile properties), specimens hybridised by over wrapping with T800s/M21 prevent failure during testing. Experimental results then sim...

This paper focuses on the complex design process of planar compliant mechanisms with flexure hinges. In the following a systematic methodology of the transition from lever mechanisms generated intuitively by the developer or non-intuitively by topology optimization to applicable compliant mechanism is presented. An extended pseudo-rigid-body model (PRBM) is used for the analysis and the modific...

This paper presents parallel kinematic XY flexure mechanism designs based on systematic constraint patterns that allow large ranges of motion without causing over-constraint or significant error motions. Key performance characteristics of XY mechanisms such as mobility, cross-axis coupling, parasitic errors, actuator isolation, drive stiffness, lost motion, and geometric sensitivity are discuss...

The Southwell Topple is a spectacular example of toppling failure on the southeastern coastline Isle Portland, south coast England. Types mass movements, which occur around almost entire Portland and include some other much smaller but well-known topples, vary depending local geological topographical contexts. ‘Southwell Landslide’ 1734 (i.e. Topple) differs in most respects from all others, no...

We describe a simulation method to design surfaces for recognizing specific monomer sequences in copolymers. We fix the monomer sequence statistics of the AB copolymers on a surface containing two types of sites and allow the simulation to iterate towards an optimal surface pattern that can recognize and selectively adsorb the sequence in the copolymer. During the simulation the surface pattern...

This paper proposes a novel analytical model for flexure-based proportion compliant mechanisms. The displacement and stiffness calculations of such flexure-based compliant mechanisms are formulated based on the principle of virtual work and pseudo rigid body model(PRBM). According to the theory and method, a set of closed-form equations are deduced in this paper, which incorporate the stiffness...

We study the nature of statistical correlations that develop between systems of interacting self-organized critical automata (sandpiles). Numerical and analytical findings are presented describing the emergence of "synchronization" between sandpiles and the dependency of this synchronization on factors such as variations in coupling strength, toppling rule probabilities, symmetric versus asymme...

We study critical properties of the continuous Abelian sandpile model with anisotropies in toppling rules that produce ordered patterns on it. Also, we consider the continuous directed sandpile model perturbed by a weak quenched randomness, study critical behavior of the model using perturbative conformal field theory, and show that the model has a random fixed point.
