Pangong is a brackish water lake having environmental conditions that are hostile to supporting life. This is the first report unveiling the microbial diversity of sediment from Pangong Lake, Ladakh, India, using a high-throughput metagenomic approach. Metagenomic data analysis revealed a community structure of microbes in which functional genetic diversity facilitates their survival.

Zhihengliuella sp. strain ISTPL4, a psychrotolerant bacterium, was isolated from brackish water of the high-altitude Pangong Lake in India. In this study, we report its draft genome sequence, which contains 3,529,629 bp with a G+C content of 69.84%. The genome is enriched in genes associated with cold adaptation and plant growth promotion.

Throughout the world, there are regions of vast extent that have many favorable features, but whose development is principally limited by the lack of fresh water. In arid areas where large-scale development has already occurred, e.g. parts of the Middle East and North Africa, the extraction of fresh water via desalination plants requires very large energy consumption. This motivates the develop...

Rhesus (Rh) glycoproteins are ammonia gas (NH(3)) channels known to be involved in ammonia transport in animals. Because of the different osmoregulatory and ionoregulatory challenges faced by teleost fishes in marine and freshwater (FW) environments, we hypothesized that ammonia excretion strategies would differ between environments. Also, we hypothesized that cutaneous NH(3) volatilization in ...

This work describes the first use of a wireless paired emitter detector diode device (PEDD) as an optical sensor for water quality monitoring in a lab-on-a-disc device. The microfluidic platform, based on an ionogel sensing area combined with a low-cost optical sensor, is applied for quantitative pH and qualitative turbidity monitoring of water samples at point-of-need. The autonomous capabilit...

Limnoraphis robusta CS-951 is a sheathed, filamentous benthic, nonheterocystous cyanobacterium. It was isolated from brackish water and identified morphologically as Lyngbya majuscula. We report the draft genome of L. robusta CS-951, with a genome size of 7,314,117 bp, a 41.6% GC content, and 6,791 putative protein-coding genes assembled into 361contigs.

Mozambique tilapia Oreochromis mossambicus were recently discovered in ‘Aimakapā Fishpond, a 12-hectare brackish-water wetland complex in Kaloko-Honokōhau National Historical Park, on the Island of Hawai’i. As a possible eradication method, we evaluated rotenone, a natural piscicide used in fish management and the active ingredient in plants traditionally used by indigenous Hawaiians for captur...

The hygienic and pathogenic consequences of the isolation of Vibrio cholerae NAG from the conjunctiva of two ducklings, from brackish water samples in their surroundings, and from the intestinal contents of a duckling, are discussed in relation to present knowledge of the occurrence of Vibrio cholerae NAG in man and animals.

Here, we present the draft genome sequence ofFlavobacteriumsp. 316, isolated from brackish water of the Gulf of Gdańsk, southern Baltic Sea. The assembly contains 3,971,755 bp in 17 scaffolds. The sequence will facilitate postgenomic studies on bacterial stress responses in the challenging habitat of the Baltic Sea.
