The impact of different detection schemes on the performance of Brillouin optical timedomain analysis is investigated theoretically and experimentally. The study provides guidance for the optimization of BOTDA sensors depending on the targeted range. Coherent Rayleigh-Brillouin scattering (CRBS) in krypton at room temperature and moderate pressure has been studied experimentally. The experimental data is in good agreement with the theoretical lineshape developed by the authors. In this paper, we describe the details of the experiment. We also discuss the application of coherent Rayleigh-Brillouin scattering in gas diagnostics.

We demonstrate experimentally that a wide control of the group velocity of light can be achieved in conventional optical fibers by use of the stimulated Brillouin scattering effect. Zero, negative and large positive group indices can be readily achieved with a simple experiment.  2005 Optical Society of America OCIS codes: (290.5900) Scattering, stimulated Brillouin; (060.4370) Nonlinear optic...

We report on an experimental investigation of stimulated Brillouin scattering pumped with a Bessel beam. Owing to the extended interaction length along the diffraction-free propagation, higher-order Stokes components are generated in a bulk Brillouin-active medium with odd and even orders propagating in opposite directions. The spatial, spectral, and temporal properties of the interacting waves...

Non-local means image denoising method is optimized to boost the performance of Brillouin distributed fiber sensors. Results demonstrate ultra-long sensing over a 200-km fiber-loop with 2m resolution using a sensing scheme without any hardware sophistication. The distributed Brillouin gain profile of an ultrathin optical microwire made of chalcogenide-glass is characterized using a phase-modulated correlation-domain measurement technique. Method resolves variations of uniformity below 5% along a 13 cm-long microwire. OCIS codes: (290.5900) Scattering, stimulated Brillouin, (060.2270) Fiber characterization

Fast reconstruction of the whole Brillouin gain spectrum is experimentally demonstrated using sweep-free Brillouin optical time-domain analysis (SF-BOTDA). Strain variations with the frequencies up to 400 Hz are spectrally analyzed, achieving strain sensitivity of 1 microstrain per root Hz at a sampling rate of 5.5 kHz and a spatial resolution of 4m. The results favorably compare with fiber Bra...

An extremely simple technique is demonstrated to realize tunable delays in optical fibers controlled by the signal average power. The system self-adapts in real time to the Brillouin fiber properties and to the signal bandwidth. ©2008 Optical Society of America OCIS codes: (060.4370) Nonlinear optics, fibers; (290.5900) Scattering, stimulated Brillouin; (350.5500) Propagation
