Brucella canis is considered a rare cause of human brucellosis. The clinical importance of this infection may have been underestimated so far because of difficulties with presumptive diagnosis. The case described here presented symptoms compatible with brucellosis but the routine tests using Brucella abortus antigen were negative. The infection would have remained undiagnosed if culture had not...

Background: Virulence of pathogenic bacteria is often determined by their ability to adapt to stress. Result: The Brucella abortus general stress response (GSR) system is required for chronic mammalian infection, and is regulated by phosphorylation and proteolysis. Conclusion: The B. abortus GSR signaling pathway has multiple layers of post-translational control, and is a determinant of chronic...

A rough-specific antigen extracted from the rough species Brucella ovis and lipopolysaccharide extracted from smooth Brucella abortus demonstrated equivalent levels of activity in tests for mouse lethality and limulus lysate clotting activity. Acetone-extracted whole cells of B. ovis and of B. canis and of a rough mutant of B; abortus had the same toxicity for mice, but it was not possible to e...

brucella melitensis and brucella abortus are of the most important causes of brucellosis, an infectious disease which is transmitted either directly or indirectly including consuming unpasteurized dairy products. both strains are considered endemic in iran. common diagnostic methods such as bacteriologic cultures are difficult and time consuming regarding the bacteria. the aim of this study was...

Brucella abortus is a facultative intracellular bacterium that infects humans and domestic animals. The enhanced susceptibility to virulent B. abortus observed in MyD88 knockout (KO) mice led us to investigate the mechanisms involved in MyD88-dependent immune responses. First, we defined the role of MyD88 in dendritic cell (DC) maturation. In vitro as well as in vivo, B. abortus-exposed MyD88 K...

Between February 1995 and June 1999, specimens from seven aborted bison (Bison bison) fetuses or stillborn calves and their placentas, two additional placentas, three dead neonates, one 2-wk-old calf, and 35 juvenile and adult female bison from Yellowstone National Park (USA) were submitted for bacteriologic and histopathologic examination. One adult animal with a retained placenta had recently...

An evaluation of a multiplex PCR assay (Bruce-ladder) was performed in seven laboratories using 625 Brucella strains from different animal and geographical origins. This robust test can differentiate in a single step all of the classical Brucella species, including those found in marine mammals and the S19, RB51, and Rev.1 vaccine strains.

Brucellosis is an infectious zoonotic disease of domestic and wild animals. It has a serious implication on human health as well as on the economic development in a developing country like India. Rapid identification and treatment of the disease in human and animal is important for the prevention of spreading the disease. Isolation with a conventional bacteriological method for the identificati...

Pathogens are detected by innate immune receptors that, upon activation, orchestrate an appropriate immune response. Recent studies revealed the intracellular signaling cascades involved in the TLR-initiated immune response to Brucella abortus infection. However, no report has elucidated the role of inflammasome receptors in Brucella recognition. Therefore, we decided to investigate the functio...
