Two brothers had infantile epilepsia partialis continua alternately involving both sides of the body. The children rapidly developed severe psychomotor regression and cerebral atrophy. A brain biopsy specimen showed evidence of chronic inflammatory changes. Extensive investigation did not provide evidence of a specific viral pathogenesis, mitochondrial disorder, or any identifiable neurodegener...
Studies examining post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) have either emphasized a relationship between PTSD and a systemically pro-inflammatory state or identified a link between PTSD and chronic disease. The aim of this study was to evaluate the evidence for a relationship between individuals with PTSD and systemic low-grade inflammation that has been proposed to underlie chronic disease develo...
Major depression is common in the context of autoimmune and inflammatory diseases and is frequently associated with persistently raised levels of proinflammatory cytokines and other markers of inflammation, even in the absence of another diagnosable immune pathology to account for these findings. Therefore immunoregulation-inducing vaccines or manipulations of the gut microbiota might prevent o...
Atopic Dermatitis (AD) is a common inflammatory, pruritic skin disorder. It is a chronic disease with often relapse. Several factors including genetic predisposition, allergies to specific foods, irritant chemicals, and aeroallergens are thought to be the cause of AD. Diagnosis is difficult, and often occurs after ruling out other disorders with a clinical presentation resembling atopic dermati...
Kimura disease is a chronic inflammatory disorder that is prevalent among Asians. It rarely affects the upper limbs or paediatric patients. We report a case of Kimura disease with first presentation as a soft tissue mass in the arm mimicking a soft tissue neoplasm with metastasis in a 12 year old Chinese boy.
Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disorder of the airways which is characterized by recurrent episodes of airway obstruction, associated with airway hyper responsiveness that leads to symptoms of dyspnea, wheezing, chest tightness, and/or coughing. Omega shaped epiglottis is a type of laryngomalacia which is a result of curling on itself of the epiglottis because of shortened aryepiglottic folds.
Observations are reported on 14 patients with a clinical diagnosis of recurrent or chronic relapsing idiopathic inflammatory polyneuropathy of Guillain-Barré type. The results suggest the possibility of a disease susceptibility gene for this disorder associated with the HLA-A1, -B8, -DRw3, and -Dw3 haplotype.
The inhalation therapy is a cornerstone in asthma treatment. A disease characterized by episodes of wheezing, breathing difficulties, chest tightness and coughing. Essentially it is a chronic inflammatory disorder associated with airway hyper responsiveness [1]. This disease already affects over 300 million people worldwide, growing at a rate of 50% per decade, and causes the death of 220 thous...
Asthma is a complex chronic inflammatory disorder of the airways. It involves several cell types and cellular elements, is associated with airway hyperresponsiveness, and is characterised by recurrent episodes of wheezing, breathlessness and cough. These symptoms restrict the patients’ daily activities, impact on their quality of life and, if severe and untreated, may lead to hospitalisation an...
Granuloma eosinophilicum faciale (GF) is a rare chronic inflammatory disorder of unknown etiology. Although the condition is benign, its treatment is often unsatisfactory. We describe a case of a 60-year-old man with GF resistant to therapy with topical corticosteroids and liquid nitrogen. After 4 months of treatment with topical tacrolimus the lesions resolved, with remission lasting for 2 years.
