INTRODUCTION With improved access to antiretroviral therapy (ART), HIV infection is becoming a chronic illness. Preliminary data suggest that HIV-infected children have a higher risk of disabilities, including hearing impairment, although data are sparse. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence and types of hearing loss in HIV-infected children in Lilongwe, Malawi. METHODS This was a cros...

BACKGROUND/AIM Prevention of the consequences of hearing loss can be accomplished by early hearing screening of the cochlear function in newborus, but also with continuous hearing screening in the early childhood. The aim of this study was to investigate the reliability and feasibility of otoacoustic emissions (OAE) in hearing screening in children, evaluate the frequency and type of hearing lo...

Introduction & Objective: Conductive hearing loss following otitis media (OM) attenuates and delays sound passing through the middle ear. This may impair central auditory functions (such as binaural hearing) and lead to central impairments that persist after the peripheral loss has resolved. This study investigated the effects of chronic otitis media (COM) on central auditory function in chil...

UNLABELLED In newborn hearing screening little importance is attributed to changes in the middle ear. Children with secretory otitis in the neonatal period are at risk for developing otitis media in the first year of life. AIM To determine if children who failed the hearing screening because of conductive hearing loss have more episodes of conductive hearing impairment during their first year...

A number of viral infections can cause hearing loss. Hearing loss induced by these viruses can be congenital or acquired, unilateral or bilateral. Certain viral infections can directly damage inner ear structures, others can induce inflammatory responses which then cause this damage, and still others can increase susceptibility or bacterial or fungal infection, leading to hearing loss. Typicall...
