We report on the measurement of the two-point correlation function and the pairwise peculiar velocity of galaxies in the IRAS PSCz survey. The real space two-point correlation function can be fitted to a power law ξ(r) = (r0/r) γ with γ = 1.69 and r0 = 3.70h Mpc. The pairwise peculiar velocity dispersion σ12(rp) is close to 400 km s −1 at rp = 3h Mpc and decreases to about 150 km s at rp ≈ 0.2h...

Many galaxies display warps, lopsided images, asymmetric rotation curves or other features which suggest that their immediate dynamical environment is neither static nor in equilibrium. In Cold Dark Matter (CDM) theories, such non-equilibrium features are expected in the inner regions of many dark haloes as a result of recent hierarchical growth. We used the excellent statistics provided by the...

We show that a global relation between baryonic mass and virial velocity can be constructed from the scale of dwarf galaxies up to that of rich galaxy clusters. The slope of this relation is close to that expected if dark matter halos form in the standard hierarchical cosmogony and capture a universal baryon fraction, once the details of halo structure and the adiabatic contraction of halos due...

The inevitable rejection of the Big Bang Theory (BBT) will lead to a more enlightened and more logical theory, but what will it be? The BBT will be replaced by the Infinite Universe Theory (IUT). It will produce the greatest revolution in science since Copernicus. A change of this magnitude will not come easily, probably not for decades, but it will come. The outlines of IUT can be seen by exam...

ABSTRACT A fundamental prediction of the cold dark matter (CDM) model structure formation is existence a vast population haloes extending to subsolar masses. By contrast, other models, such as warm thermal relic (WDM), predict cutoff in mass function at which, for popular lies approximately between 107 and $10^{10}\, {\rm M}_\odot$. We use mock observations demonstrate viability forward modelli...

The clustering of dark halos depends not only on their mass but also on their assembly history, a dependence we term ‘assembly bias’. Using a galaxy formation model grafted onto the Millennium Simulation of the ΛCDM cosmogony, we study how assembly bias affects galaxy clustering. We compare the original simulation to ‘shuffled’ versions where the galaxy populations are randomly swapped among ha...

In this paper we derive the mass function of seed black holes that result from the central mass concentrated via disc accretion in collapsed haloes at redshift z ≈ 15. Using standard arguments including stability, we show that these pre-galactic discs can assemble a significant mass concentration in the inner regions, providing fuel for the formation and initial growth of super-massive black ho...

In the generic CDM cosmogony, dark-matter halos emerge too lumpy and centrally concentrated to host observed galactic disks. Moreover, disks are predicted to be smaller than those observed. We argue that the resolution of these problems may lie with a combination of the effects of protogalactic disks which would have had a mass comparable to that of the inner dark halo and be plausibly non-axis...

We present velocity statistics of galaxies and their biases inferred from the statistics of the underlying dark matter using a cosmological hydrodynamic simulation of galaxy formation in low-density and spatially flat (Ω0 = 0.3 and λ0 = 0.7) cold dark matter cosmogony. Our simulation is based on a P M N -body Poisson solver and smoothed particle hydrodynamics. Galaxies in our simulation are ide...

We use the very large Millennium Simulation of the concordance ΛCDM cosmogony to calibrate the bias and error distribution of Timing Argument estimators of the masses of the Local Group and of the Milky Way. From a large number of isolated spiral-spiral pairs similar to the Milky Way/Andromeda system, we find the interquartile range of the ratio of timing mass to true mass to be a factor of 1.8...
