OBJECTIVE To investigate the effectiveness of aspirin and coumarin in preventing thromboembolism in patients with non-rheumatic atrial fibrillation in general practice. DESIGN Randomised controlled trial. PARTICIPANTS 729 patients aged >/=60 years with atrial fibrillation, recruited in general practice, who had no established indication for coumarin. Mean age was 75 years and mean follow up...

An inverse design methodology suitable to assist the synthesis and optimization of molecular sensitizers for dye-sensitized solar cells is introduced. The method searches for molecular adsorbates with suitable photoabsorption properties through continuous optimization of "alchemical" structures in the vicinity of a reference molecular framework. The approach is illustrated as applied to the des...

In the title compound, C(21)H(18)O(6), a previously unknown coumarin derivative, the benzoyl substitutent makes a dihedral angle of 53.80 (16)° with the plane of the coumarin rings. An intramolecular O-H⋯O hydrogen bond is observed.

A coumarin-fused diazirine photolabeling agent exhibited dramatic enhancement in fluorescence after cross-linking with the target protein. Fluorescence emission from the coumarin moiety was efficiently quenched by the diazirine group, and was then intensively recovered from photolysis treatment by irradiation with light at a wavelength of 365 nm.

In the title compound, C(15)H(10)O(2), a 3-phenyl derivative of the coumarin (also known as 2H-chromen-2-one or 2H-1-benzopyran-2-one) scaffold, the C(p)-C(p)-C(c)-C(c) torsion angle between the coumarin (c) ring system and the phenyl (p) ring is -47.6 (2)°.

An aqueous molecular tube composed of polyaromatic frameworks with peripheral hydrophilic groups was prepared. The new tube has a well-defined hydrophobic cavity with a diameter of ∼1 nm and quantitatively binds two molecules of fluorescent coumarin dyes in aqueous solutions. The bound coumarin dimers in a stacked fashion exhibit unusual excimer-like emissions in the confined space through effi...

A series of novel non-symmetrical coumarin-fused BODIPY dyes were synthesised. Their absorption and emission properties are strongly influenced by substitution in the coumarin moiety. Diethylamino-substituted dyes showed near-IR emission with large Stokes shifts (up to 144 nm) and good fluorescence quantum yields.

Optical data storage was performed with various thin polymer films containing coumarin-based derivatives and by using femtosecond laser pulses as well as two-photon absorption processes. Exploring the photodimerization attribute of coumarin derivatives and using appropriate irradiation wavelengths, recording/erasing processes could be carried out in the same area. Second harmonic generation mic...

The title compound, C(16)H(12)O(5)S, is a derivative of coumarin. The dihedral angle between the coumarin ring system and the phenyl ring is 65.9 (1)°. In the crystal structure, mol-ecules are linked by weak C-H⋯O hydrogen bonding to form molecular ribbons.
