Mineral physicist Steven Jacobsen uses high pressure-temperature experimental techniques to investigate the properties of mantle mineral phases such as ringwoodite, the blue crystal (left) pictured through the top of a diamond-anvil cell. Jacobsen’s studies will help EPS seismologist Suzan van der Lee map the Earth’s interior as they attempt to identify the driving forces behind plate tectonics...

This paper studies optimal auction design when the seller can affect the buyers’ valuations through an unobservable ex ante investment. The key insight is that the optimal mechanism may have the seller play a mixed investment strategy so as to create correlation between the otherwise (conditionally) independent valuations of buyers. The paper establishes conditions under which the seller can, i...

Screen media, such as television and videos, are a common part of young children’s lives. Yet infants and toddlers have been shown to learn less effectively from screens than from interactions with another person. Using a quasi-experimental design we explored how social factors of screen media coviewing impact children’s learning outcomes. We observed parents co-viewing a novel word training vi...

Recent results in experimental and personnel economics indicate that women do not like competitive environments as much as men. This article presents an experimental design which gives participants the opportunity to enter a tournament as part of a team rather than alone. While a large and significant gender gap in entry in the individual tournament is found in line with the literature, no gend...

Some people may be laughing when looking at you reading in your spare time. Some may be admired of you. And some may want be like you who have reading hobby. What about your own feel? Have you felt right? Reading is a need and a hobby at once. This condition is the on that will make you feel that you must read. If you know are looking for the book enPDFd statistical design of experiments with e...

A set of well known necessary conditions for the existence of a large set of t-designs, LS[N ](t, k, v), is N ∣∣∣(v−i k−i) for i = 0, . . . , t. We investigate the existence of large sets of size four. We take advantages of the recursive and direct constructions to show that the trivial necessary conditions are sufficient when N = 4, t = 2, 3 and k ≤ 7.

Virtual teams play an increasingly important role in the modern economy, and many organizations struggle to overcome the weaknesses inherent in technology-mediated work. Identity communication has been shown to greatly improve individualand group-level outcomes in offline settings, but these benefits have not been investigated in the context of virtual teams, where mediated interaction can affe...

this thesis attempts to investigate the effects of prelistening activities on enhancing iranian efl learners` listening comprehension. the present study investigated ways in which learners` background knowledge could be activated in order to enhance their l2 listening comprehension by limiting the number of possible text interpretations prior to listening. the experiments conducted in this study examined the effect of prior knowledge and vocabulary teaching on iranian efl learners listening comprehension. the current study has two purposes: one is to investigate the effect of background knowledge on the second language listening comprehension of iranian intermediates and the other is to determine whether second language is facilitated by the introduction of unknown vocabularies in the form of prelistening activities. to conduct the study different instruments such as listening proficiency test and four listening tests such as pre and posttests were used and various statistical processes and techniques including paired-sample t-test, and analysis of variance (anova) were used. the findings of this study supported all three hypotheses tested. differences were found between the means of preteaching vocabulary variable, the background knowledge activation variable, and mean difference between these two strategies variable. subjects scored higher when the unknown words were taught in advance. likewise, subjects scored higher when they were asked some relevant questions about the topic than on those without them. there was, in addition, a significant difference between the means of preteaching vocabulary strategy and background knowledge activation strategy. in fact, preteaching vocabulary had a better effect in enhancing the students’ listening comprehension, in comparison to background knowledge activation strategy.
