The inverse Compton scattering of interstellar photons off cosmic-ray electrons seems to play a more important rôle in the generation of diffuse emission from the Galaxy than thought before. The background radiation field of the Galaxy is highly anisotropic since it is dominated by the radiation from the Galactic plane. An observer in the Galactic plane thus sees mostly head-on scatterings even...
Congenital hemidysplasia with ichthyosiform nevus and limb defects (CHILD) syndrome is a rare X-linked hereditary disorder. Presentation varies from ichthyosiform nevus to complete limb amelia. We present a 17-year-old adolescent girl who presented with a 16-cm exophytic mass of the right foot that had been growing for 7 years as well as knee contracture. Deformed nails with onychorrhexis were ...
We report the case of a 51-year-old male smoker with diabetes mellitus and hyperlipidaemia and a long history of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection treated with various antiretroviral regimes, who was referred to the otolaryngology department with progressive dysphonia. Fibre-optic laryngoscopy showed a solitary, yellowish-white pedunculated polyp on the anteri...
We present a preliminary analysis of the diffuse hard Xand soft γ-ray continuum emission from the inner Galactic ridge using INTEGRAL/SPI data from the first Galactic Plane Deep Exposure and Galactic Plane Scans. The spectrum is consistent with results from previous experiments. These early results demonstrate the potential of the INTEGRAL mission for improving our understanding of this emission.
Verruciform xanthoma (VX) is an uncommon benign lesion of unclear etiology which has only been reported twice before in the esophagus. We describe a 70-year-old male who presented an exophytic esophageal lesion incidentally found upon endoscopy 2.7 years following radiation therapy for unresectable squamous cell carcinoma of the tracheal carina. Histologically, the lesion showed a papillary sur...
The dominant part of the diffuse gamma rays beyond 1 TeV from the Galactic plane has been thought as due to the inverse Compton scattering of interstellar photons with high-energy cosmic-ray electrons. In these energy regions, diffuse gamma-ray observations give us unique information on the energy spectrum of high-energy electron in the interstellar space, since we cannot observe those electron...
Diffuse Galactic gamma-ray emission is produced in interactions of cosmic rays with gas and ambient photon fields and thus provides us with an indirect measurement of cosmic rays in various locations in the Galaxy. The diffuse gamma-ray continuum is more intense than expected both at energies below 200 keV and above 1 GeV. The existing models for the high-energy excess are reviewed in the light...
