Numerous therapeutic peptides do not enter the clinical trials just because of their high hemolytic activity. Recently, we developed a database, Hemolytik, for maintaining experimentally validated hemolytic and non-hemolytic peptides. The present study describes a web server and mobile app developed for predicting, and screening of peptides having hemolytic potency. Firstly, we generated a data...

In recent years several groups have used serological methods to demonstrate pneumococcal capsular antigens in sputum. In the present study 123 strains of alpha-hemolytic streptococci (including 97 strains from sputum or pharyngeal specimens) were tested for cross-reactions with a polyvalent antipneumococcal serum (Omniserum). Representatives of the following species were included: Streptococcus...

T HE ERYTHROCYTES of patients with Paroxysmal Nocturnal Hemoglobinuria (PNH) hemolyse at 37 C. in normal compatible human sera in the absence of demonstrable antibody. The reaction is complement dependent and in vivo causes a hemolytic anemia of varying severity. The diagnostic acid hemolysis test for this disorder is performed by demonstrating hemolysis of suspect erythrocytes in the patient’s...

Drug induced autoimmune hemolytic anemia is a well-known complication of drug therapy but it is often misdiagnosed. Drug induced autoimmune hemolytic anemia is difficult to differantiate from classical autoimmune hemolytic anemia. Here, we have reported a case with autoimmune hemolytic anemia might be caused by drugs such as teicoplanin, imipenem and amphotericin B. In our case, on the fifteent...

Alpha-hemolytic-like activity from Campylobacter jejuni was clearly apparent when the medium pH ranged from 6.0 to 6.5, but the hemolytic zones disappeared when the pH of the medium increased. Beta-hemolytic-like activity just beneath the bacterial growth appeared after prolonged incubation. The hemolytic activity was not influenced by the species of blood.

A 55-year-old female with a history of psychosis and rheumatoid arthritis was admitted to the hospital for fatigue and dizziness. At admission, macrocytic anemia, high serum lactic acid dehydrogenase (LDH) and gastrin concentrations, decreased serum vitamin B12 concentration, with macroovalocytes and poikilocytes in peripheral blood smear suggested the diagnosis of pernicious anemia. Indirect a...

The direct anti-globulin test was performed at random on 310 hospitalized patients with various diseases. Thirty-three patients were positive to anti-globulin test without any evidence of manifest autoimmune hemolytic anemia. Hematologic and erythrokinetic studies on these patients with latent autoim mune hemolytic syndrome revealed that their slight anemia was secondary anemia due to their bas...

About 2-10% of patients with warm-antibody autoimmune hemolytic anemia (WAIHA) exhibit a negative direct Coombs test (DAT), requiring more sensitive tests, including detection of RBC-bound immunoglobulins by flow cytometry, for diagnosis. In this study, the optimal conditions for detection and quantitation of RBC-bound IgG by flow cytometry were studied using blood samples from six patients wit...

BACKGROUND It is unclear why haemolysis may somewhat persist in patients with cold autoimmune haemolytic anaemia (cAIHA) at 37 °C (core temperature). METHODS Seven patients with cAIHA were included in this study. Serological testing was performed using standard techniques. Bound autoantibodies (aab) on patients' RBCs were analysed by the direct antiglobulin test (DAT), dual antiglobulin test ...

Recombinant thermostable direct hemolysin from Grimontia hollisae (Gh-rTDH) exhibits paradoxical Arrhenius effect, where the hemolytic activity is inactivated by heating at 60 °C but is reactivated by additional heating above 80 °C. This study investigated individual or collective mutational effect of Tyr53, Thr59, and Ser63 positions of Gh-rTDH on hemolytic activity, Arrhenius effect, and biop...
