The authors report a fatal case of disseminated tuberculosis in a 14-yr-old girl, which developed immediately after a measles-rubella (MR) vaccination. Despite a markedly accelerated clinical course which led to death within two weeks, the authors could not identify any possible cause of the tuberculosis aggravation in this case, with the exception of the MR vaccination. The possible role that ...
Yau Ma Tei Dermatology Clinic, 12/F, Yau Ma Tei Specialist Clinic, 143 Battery Street, Kowloon, Hong Kong A five-month-old boy presented with fever and multiple cutaneous papular eruptions. Skin biopsy revealed disseminated cutaneous tuberculosis (tuberculosis cutis disseminata). Tissue culture revealed Mycobacteria bovis (BCG). He was later diagnosed to have severe combined immunodeficiency. T...
Tuberculosis and lymphoma can share common features. We report the case of a non-HIV 60-year old man diagnosed with a severe form of disseminated tuberculosis in whom the atypical course of the disease under treatment led to investigations that unveiled the coexistence a non-Hodgkin lymphoma. This rare association has putative pathophysiological foundations. This justifies to raise the lymphoma...
Pancreatic involvement in tuberculosis is known but uncommon. The clinical manifestation may vary from painless obstructive jaundice due to pancreatic mass (cyst or abscess) to fever of unknown origin. Here we report a case who initially presented as acute pancreatitis relapsing into chronic pancreatitis as an initial manifestation of disseminated tuberculosis.
In the absence of coexisting immunocompromised state and lack of specific symptoms a reactivation of treated mycobacterial tuberculosis (MTB) infection is generally not considered in the differential diagnosis of leg pain. We present a unique case of disseminated tuberculosis presenting as an infected Baker's cyst in a 73-year-old immunocompetent male.
The clinical presentation of Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection varies in patients with AIDS. We report a case of disseminated tuberculosis in an AIDS patient. The initial manifestation was masked by fluoroquinolone monotherapy, and subsequently complicated by acalculous cholecystitis and immune restoration syndrome after antiretroviral therapy.
Tumor necrosis factor α antagonist therapies represent an increased risk of reactivation of tuberculosis. We report two cases of life-threatening disseminated tuberculosis in patients undergoing treatment with infliximab for Crohn's disease including one case of a patient with cerebral tuberculomas. We discuss the implication of tumor necrosis factor α in the genesis of tuberculosis infection a...
485 HIV-positive patients have been treated at our institution in Bonn during 1985 to 1989. Mycobacterial infections occurred in twelve (2.5%) HIV-positive patients. Of 166 AIDS-manifestations according to CDC, eleven (6.6%) were mycobacterial infections. There occurred one case of miliary tuberculosis, six cases of extrapulmonary, one of disseminated tuberculosis and four cases of atypical myc...
A neonate presented with poor feeding, jaundice and hepatosplenomegaly. He was in liver failure with disseminated coagulopathy. Post-mortem liver biopsy revealed discrete granulomas with central necrosis and acid-fast bacilli on Ziehl-Nielsen's stain. The mother had active tuberculosis at delivery. The principal characteristics of congenital tuberculosis are reemphasized in this observation.
Immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome (IRIS) is the paradoxical worsening of pre-existing infectious processes after commencement of anti-retroviral therapy (ART) in HIV-infected patients. Its manifestations are dependent on the underlying opportunistic infections. We report a case of an HIV-infected patient with disseminated tuberculosis, who responded to anti-tuberculosis therapy but su...
