Over the past decade considerable progress has been made towards the numerical solution of large-scale eigenvalue problems, particularly for nonsymmetric matrices. Krylov methods and variants of subspace iteration have been improved to the point that problems of the order of several million variables can be solved. The methods and software that have led to these advances are surveyed.

The di erential equation dX dt X k X where k is a Toeplitz annihilator has been suggested as a means to solve the inverse Toeplitz eigenvalue problem Starting with the diagonal matrix whose entries are the same as the given eigenvalues the solution ow has been observed numerically to always converge a symmetric Toeplitz matrix as t This paper is an attempt to understand the dynamics involved in...

Power Method We now describe the power method for computing the dominant eigenpair. Its extension to the inverse power method is practical for finding any eigenvalue provided that a good initial approximation is known. Some schemes for finding eigenvalues use other methods that converge fast, but have limited precision. The inverse power method is then invoked to refine the numerical values and...

We present two complementary methods, each applicable in a different range, to evaluate the distribution of the lowest eigenvalue of random matrices in a Jacobi ensemble. The first method solves an associated Painlevé VI nonlinear differential equation numerically, with suitable initial conditions that we determine. The second method proceeds via constructing the power-series expansion of the P...

In this paper we develop a complete analytical framework based on Random Matrix Theory for the performance evaluation of Eigenvalue-based Detection. While, up to now, analysis was limited to falsealarm probability, we have obtained an analytical expression also for the probability of missed detection, by using the theory of spiked population models. A general scenario with multiple signals pres...

We provide a priori error estimates for variational approximations of the ground state eigenvalue and eigenvector of nonlinear elliptic eigenvalue problems of the form −div(A∇u) + V u + f(u)u = λu, ‖u‖L2 = 1. We focus in particular on the Fourier spectral approximation (for periodic problems) and on the P1 and P2 finite-element discretizations. Denoting by (uδ, λδ) a variational approximation o...

We present an extension of Eigen’s model for quasi-species including the competition among individuals, proposed as the simplest mechanism for the formation of new species in a smooth fitness landscape. We are able to obtain analytically the critical threshold for species formation. The comparison with numerical simulations is very good.

— In this paper, we consider the problem of deriving new eigenvalue distributions of real-valued Wishart matrices that arises in many scientific and engineering applications. The distributions are derived using the tools from the theory of skew symmetric matrices. In particular, we relate the multiple integrals of a determinant, which arises while finding the eigenvalue distributions, in terms ...

We analyze how individual eigenvalues of the QCD Dirac operator at nonzero quark chemical potential are distributed in the complex plane. Exact and approximate analytical results for both quenched and unquenched distributions are derived from non-Hermitian random matrix theory. When comparing these to quenched lattice QCD spectra close to the origin, excellent agreement is found for zero and no...

We discuss optimal control problems for general unstructured linear differentialalgebraic equations of arbitrary index. We discuss controllability and observability in the higher order case and show that order reduction may lead to false results. We then derive necessary conditions in the case of linear-quadratic control problems and show how these lead to eigenvalue problems for for even matri...
