We study the ability of high order numerical methods to propagate discrete waves at the same speed as the physical waves in the case of the one-way wave equation. A detailed analysis of the finite element method is presented including an explicit form for the discrete dispersion relation and a complete characterisation of the numerical Bloch waves admitted by the scheme. A comparision is made w...

In this paper, an H-Galerkin mixed finite element method is discussed for the coupled Burgers equations. The optimal error estimates of the semi-discrete and fully discrete schemes of the coupled Burgers equation are derived. Keywords—The coupled Burgers equation; H-Galerkin mixed finite element method; Backward Euler’s method; Optimal error estimates.

We introduce and analyze two new semi-discrete numerical methods for the multi-dimensional Vlasov-Poisson system. The schemes are constructed by combing a discontinuous Galerkin approximation to the Vlasov equation together with a mixed finite element method for the Poisson problem. We show optimal error estimates in the case of smooth compactly supported initial data. We propose a scheme that ...

For the purpose of surgical simulation, we propose an algorithm based upon the Element Free Galerkin method, Total Lagrangian explicit dynamics and nonlinear material formulation. The proposed algorithm does not require a finite element mesh, so is well suited to simulations with irregular geometry. As an example, a simplified 3D simulation of craniotomy induced brain shift including brain, ven...

The development of numerical methods for solving the Helmholtz equation, which behaves robustly with respect to the wave number, is a topic of vivid research. It was observed that the solution of the Galerkin finite element method (FEM) differs significantly from the best approximation with increasing wave number. Many attempts have been presented in the literature to eliminate this lack of rob...
