BACKGROUND Gypsies, Travellers and Roma (referred to as Travellers) are less likely to access health services, including immunisation. To improve immunisation rates, we need to understand what helps and hinders individuals in these communities in taking up immunisations. AIMS (1) Investigate the barriers to and facilitators of acceptability and uptake of immunisations among six Traveller comm...
Even brief visits abroad may bring travellers into contact with pathogens against which they have no immunity. Though returning home apparently well, the travellers may be incubating an exotic illness with which they then present to their local doctor. We report a recent outbreak of acute Schistosoma mansoni infection that occurred in this way.
Descriptive review of geographic mapping of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) on the Internet
From geographic mapping at different scales to location-based alerting services, geoinformatics plays an important role in the study and control of global outbreaks like severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS). This paper reviews several geographic mapping efforts of SARS on the Internet that employ a variety of techniques like choropleth rendering, graduated circles, graduated pie charts, buf...
In August 2011, a Plasmodium vivax malaria infection was diagnosed in a Romanian traveller returning from Greece. This case together with several reports over the past decade of autochthonous cases in Greece highlight that malaria should be considered as differential diagnosis in symptomatic travellers returning from this country. Travellers may serve as sentinels of emerging vector-borne disea...
In this study, we show that 40.29% of travellers with a possible history of malaria exposure were positive for anti-Plasmodium spp. antibodies, while these individuals were negative by microscopy. The antibody test described here is useful to elucidate malaria exposure in microscopy-negative travellers from endemic countries.
Introduction: Invasive fungal sinusitis, though considered to be rare entity, is nowadays frequently encountered, not only in immunocompromised patients but also in immunocompetent patients. The changing prevalence towards immunocompetent hosts is due to the indiscriminate usage of broad spectrum antibiotics, steroids, and immunosuppressive drugs. Diagnosing invasive fungal sinusitis should not...
Chikungunya fever is a viral disease transmitted to humans by the bite of infected Aedes aegypti mosquito. Like malaria and dengue, this infection has almost become endemic in India, especially central and south India. Symptoms of sudden onset of fever, chills, headache, nausea, vomiting, joint pain with or without swelling, low back pain, and rash are very similar to those of dengue but, unlik...
Conflicting claims are made about the extent to which Travellers in Britain remain outsiders urban society (McGarry 2017; Sibley 1981). This paper sheds light on this question by addressing a neglected aspect of Traveller mobility, namely day-to-day traversing spaces beyond their (typically segregated) trailer sites. Focusing public transport, it draws eighteen months ethnographic research with...
