Real world does not only provide noisy instead of perfect data. Every experimentalist has now and then to deal with outliers. The situation is simple if isolated points stick out of the general trend by a large amount. Arguments can then usually be found why such a point should be disregarded. The situation becomes critical if the outliers are not that obvious. This is usually the case for para...

We present a new method for parameter identification of ODE system descriptions based on data measurements. Our method works by splitting the system into a number of subsystems and working on each of them separately, thereby being easily parallelisable, and can also deal with noise in the observations.

We use the forward search to provide robust Mahalanobis distances to detect the presence of outliers in a sample of multivariate normal data. Theoretical results on order statistics and on estimation in truncated samples provide the distribution of our test statistic. We also introduce several new robust distances with associated distributional results. Comparisons of our procedure with tests u...

This comment is to show that Theorem3.3 of Dey and Chung (1991) (Multiparameter estimation intruncated power series distributions under the Stein's loss.emph{Commun. Statist.-Theory Meth.,} {bf 20}, 309-326) may giveus misleading results. Analytically and through simulation, weshow that the Theorem does not improve the given estimator.

Abstract: The big share of electrical breakdown in electrical devices failure among other factors is caused by multitasking such as electrical insulation, mechanical support, energy dissipation, Energy storage, etc. which brings many attentions to lifetime estimation of said insulation material. Up to now, there was no-general theory had been suggested for lifetime estimation of mentioned insul...

A well-known theoretical result for motion estimation using generalized camera model is that 17 corresponding image rays can be used to solve linearly for the motion of a generalized camera. However, this paper shows that for many common configurations of the generalized camera models (e.g., multi-camera rig, catadioptric camera etc.), such a simple 17-point algorithm does not exist, due to som...

In recent years large scientific interest has been devoted to joint data decoding and parameter estimation techniques. In this paper, iterative turbo decoding joint to channel frequency and phase estimation is proposed. The phase and frequency estimator is embedded into the structure of the turbo decoder itself, keeping into consideration both turbo interleaving and puncturing. Results show tha...

This paper examines the methods used by the Bank of Japan for the estimation of the output gap. Attention is paid to the real-time estimation problem. After reviewing the evolution of output gap estimation at the Bank, I discuss advantages and disadvantages of the various output gap measures. First, I examine the usefulness of the output gap for inflation forecasting and show that the real-time...
