The psychrotolerant bacterium Pectobacterium atrosepticum produces four N-acyl homoserine lactones under a wide range of temperatures. Their thermoregulation differs from that of the exoenzyme production, described as being under quorum-sensing control. A mechanism involved in this thermoregulation consists of controlling N-acyl homoserine lactones synthase production at a transcriptional level.

The chemokine RANTES is a potent agonist of T cell activation. In an investigation of signal-transduction events activated by this chemokine, we have shown that RANTES stimulates dose-dependent phospholipase D (PLD) activity in Jurkat cells. Equilibrium-binding analyses using 125I-labeled RANTES indicated the presence of a receptor for RANTES on these cells, which has a Kd of 0.1 nM, is express...

Diabetic patients have an increased proportion of their immunoglobulins nonenzymically glycated. To investigate the possibility that this may contribute to increased susceptibility to infection, we compared the immunoreactivity of glycated and nonglycated human immunoglobulins against rubella and hepatitis; streptococcal exoenzyme and infectious mononucleosis; human lymphocytotoxic antigens (HL...

Autotaxin (ATX) is an exoenzyme that potently induces tumor cell motility, and enhances experimental metastasis and angiogenesis. ATX was shown recently to be identical to serum lysophospholipase D activity, producing lysophosphatidic acid (LPA) from lyso-glycerophospholipids. LPA, itself a strong chemoattractant for tumor cells, may mediate the actions of ATX. We now extend the substrate speci...

PURPOSE To determine the role of the small guanosine triphosphate (GTP)-binding protein Rho in the migration of corneal epithelial cells. METHODS The presence of the Rho target proteins Rho-associated coiled coil-containing protein kinase (ROCK)-1 and ROCK-2 in rabbit cornea was examined by immunohistochemical analysis, and that of the corresponding mRNAs in rabbit corneal epithelial cells wa...
