In this work we present the continuation of the reported analysis [1] of the experimentally measured angular distributions of the reaction Cd(α, α)Cd at several different energies around the Coulomb barrier. The difficulties that arise in the study of Cd-α-nuclear potential and the so called Family Problem are addressed.

Lumen expansion driven by hydrostatic pressure occurs during many morphogenetic processes. Although it is well established that members of the Claudin family of transmembrane tight junction proteins determine paracellular tightness within epithelial/endothelial barrier systems, functional evidence for their role in the morphogenesis of lumenized organs has been scarce. Here, we identify Claudin...

BACKGROUND The evolution of drug-resistant viruses challenges the management of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infections. Understanding this evolutionary process is important for the design of effective therapeutic strategies. METHODS We used mutagenetic trees, a family of probabilistic graphical models, to describe the accumulation of resistance-associated mutations in the viral genome....

To identify putative gene regulatory regions that respond to epidermal injury, we mapped chromatin dynamics in a stratified human epidermis during barrier maturation and disruption. Engineered skin substitutes (ESS) cultured at the air-liquid interface were used as a model of developing human epidermis with incomplete barrier formation. The epidermal barrier stabilized following engraftment ont...

GLIC is a bacterial member of the large family of pentameric ligand-gated ion channels. To study ion conduction through GLIC and other membrane channels, we combine the one-dimensional potential of mean force for ion passage with a Smoluchowski diffusion model, making it possible to calculate single-channel conductance in the regime of low ion concentrations from all-atom molecular dynamics (MD...

cAMP enhances endothelial barrier properties and is protective against various inflammatory mediators both in vivo and in vitro. However, the mechanisms whereby cAMP stabilizes the endothelial barrier are largely unknown. Recently we demonstrated that the Rho family GTPase Rac-1 is required for maintenance of endothelial barrier functions in vivo and in vitro. Therefore, in the present study we...

Introduction Recent I )NA cloning studies have revealed the existence of a large family o f homologous solute transporters (the ‘sugar transporter’ family) in organisms as diverse as mammals. plants, fungi and bacteria [ 11. These proteins catalyse the transport of ;I mide range o f substrates. including not only monosaccharides and disaccharides, but also iionsugar molecules such as tricx-boxy...

The ocular barriers (cornea, blood-retinal barrier, and blood-aqueous humor barrier) make treating eye diseases with therapeutic drugs challenging. The tight capillary endothelium of the iris and the ciliary body epithelium form the blood-aqueous humor barrier. The iris and ciliary body (iris-ciliary body) express a variety of drug transporters in the ATP-binding cassette and solute carrier (SL...

BACKGROUND/AIM This study was conducted in order to determine the factors related to women's barrier perception to participate in breast cancer screenings in a region affiliated with a family health center. MATERIALS AND METHODS The study was a cross-sectional study. The sample group of the study consisted of 300 women. Descriptive statistics, t test, and Mann-Whitney U test were performed fo...

BACKGROUND AND AIMS A genetically impaired intestinal barrier function has long been suspected to be a predisposing factor for Crohn's disease (CD). Recently, mutations of the capsase recruitment domain family, member 15 (CARD15) gene have been identified and associated with CD. We hypothesise that a CARD15 mutation may be associated with an impaired intestinal barrier. METHODS We studied 128...
