Previously, we reported that a feline T lymphoid cell line, FL74 cells, was very sensitive to feline parvovirus (FPV) infection. In the present study, we developed new quantitative methods for detection of FPV and virus neutralizing antibody against FPV using FL74 cells. The methods presented here were very simple and applicable to both canine parvovirus and feline panleukopenia virus.

The human SAMHD1 protein is a novel retroviral restriction factor expressed in myeloid cells. Previous work has correlated the deoxynucleotide triphosphohydrolase activity of SAMHD1 with its ability to block HIV-1 and SIV(mac) infection. SAMHD1 is comprised of the sterile alpha motif (SAM) and histidine-aspartic (HD) domains; however the contribution of these domains to retroviral restriction i...

BACKGROUND The feline leukaemia virus (FeLV) is a gammaretrovirus commonly affecting cats. Infection with this virus often leads to fatal outcomes and, so far, no cure is available for this disease. Synthetic peptides with structures mimicking the transmembrane protein of the viral surface proteins hold the potential to effectively interfere with viral entry by hampering the fusion of viral and...

Retroviruses infect a wide range of organisms including humans. Among them, HIV-1, which causes AIDS, has now become a major threat for world health. Some of these viruses are also potential gene transfer vectors. In this study, the patterns of synonymous codon usage in retroviruses have been studied through multivariate statistical methods on ORFs sequences from the available 56 retroviruses. ...

The reverse transcriptase (RT) assay is a simple, relatively inexpensive, widely used assay that can detect all retroviruses (known and novel retroviruses as well as infectious and defective retroviruses) on the basis of the divalent cation requirement of their RT enzyme, i.e., Mg2+ or Mn2+. Descriptions of various RT assays have been published; however, they cannot be directly applied to the a...

OBJECTIVES To develop a composite measure pain scale tool to assess acute pain in cats and derive an intervention score. METHODS To develop the prototype composite measure pain scale-feline, words describing painful cats were collected, grouped into behavioural categories and ranked. To assess prototype validity two observers independently assigned composite measure pain scale-feline and nume...

Several human retroviruses have been discovered in the past decade, the majority of which have been implicated as etiological agents of severe disease entities. Thus, there is a clear need for accurate identification of human retroviruses in the laboratory. In this review, the classification and general properties of human retroviruses are outlined. Methods for detecting the presence of antibod...

feline infectious peritonitis virus (fipv) is ubiquitous in domestic cats, especially in young cats and multi-cat environments. in the present study, a total of 248 companion cats of different ages were examined for serum antibody detection of fipv by immunochromatography assay. the cats were selected from those referring to veterinary hospital of ahvaz university, southwestern iran from decemb...

Several infectious diseases are the cause or associated with the female and occasionally the male reproductive system of the cat.1>2,3,4,5,6^7,a Most notable are the viral diseases that cause infertility, embryonal-fetal death and resorption, malformations, abortion, mummification, stillborns and kitten neonatal death. Two classical viral infections, panleukopenia and feline viral rhinotracheit...

A feline monocytic cell line was established from a venous blood sample obtained from a healthy male donor cat. The cloned cells, temporarily named FLMo/K02, were successively passaged in vitro with cell growth medium consisting of RPMI-1640 supplemented with 10% heat-inactivated fetal calf serum. Non-specific esterase and acid phosphatase, as marker enzymes, were clearly demonstrated by cytoch...
