For a full five minutes, I completely misunderstood what Janet was telling me. 'Emma went on a canine first aid course at the weekend.' Canine first aid? I guess it could work.

The generative conception of grammars relies on the derivation process which, to its turn, depends on a hierarchical representation of syntax. We show in this paper how a fully constraint-based approach, avoiding such restriction, can constitute an alternative to generativity and form the basis of a framework for a model-theoretic conception of grammar.
We examined how grammatical aspect and visual perspective taking (firstor third-person) influence the ability to imagine accomplishments. Our main prediction was that it would be easier to imagine completed (I had built the fence.) than ongoing events (I was building the fence.) because accomplishments include natural temporal end points. Slow cortical brain potentials were examined as an index...
We show that the discrete Heisenberg group has unbounded deadend depth with respect to every finite generating set. We also show that, in contrast, it has bounded retreat depth.
Today, event logs contain vast amounts of data that can easily overwhelm a human. Therefore, the mining of frequent patterns from event logs is an important system and network management task. This paper discusses the properties of event log data, analyses the suitability of popular mining algorithms for processing event log data, and proposes an efficient algorithm for mining frequent patterns...
We rely on the strength of linguistic and philosophical perspectives in constructing a framework that offers a unified explanation for presuppositions and existential commitment. We use a rich ontology and a set of methodological principles that embed the essence of Meinong’s philosophy and Grice’s conversational principles into a stratified logic, under an unrestricted interpretation of the qu...
Business modelling methods are popular but, since they operate primarily in the early stages of software lifecycles, most are informal. This paper describes how we have used a conventional formal notation (first order predicate logic) in combination with automated support tools to replicate the key components of an established, informal, business modelling method: IBM’s Business System Developm...
Head Start and the Distribution of Long Term Education and Labor Market Outcomes* In this paper we investigate the effect of Head Start on long term education and labor market outcomes using data from the NLSY79. The contributions to the existing literature on the effectiveness of Head Start are threefold: (1) we are the first to examine distributional effects of Head Start on long term outcome...
Since the development of courseware is expensive, reuse is a must. In order to reach the full reuse potential, the individual courseware modules that are stored in a repository should be neutral with respect to as many aspects as possible. In this paper, we examine how didactic-neutral courseware modules can be achieved and in particular how their combination into courses exhibiting a certain d...
