Artificial chemistries are usually used to study what phenomena occur in a given setup, and simulators are the primary tools. This paper attempts to address a reverse question, that is, what setup is required to produce given molecules, using reasoning as the tool. We give a procedure to answer whether specified molecules can be produced in a given system described in our artificial chemistry, ...

Graphplan has attracted considerable interest because of its extremely high performance, but the algorithm's inability to handle action representations more expressive than STRIPS is a major limitation. In particular , extending Graphplan to handle conditional eeects is a surprisingly subtle enterprise. In this paper, we describe the space of possible alternatives, and then concentrate on one p...

Most workflow systems that support data provenance primarily focus on tracing lineage of data. Data provenance by data lineage provides the derivation history of data including information about services and input data that contributed to the creation of a data product. We show that tracing lineage by means of full backward chaining not only enables users to share, discover and reuse the data, ...

In this paper, we propose diagnosis of steady-state process behaviour using rules derived from the signed directed graph(SDG) representing the interaction among the process variables. All abnormalities are correlated using backward reasoning through rules to yield a diagnosis. These rules can be added with experimental rules which are obtained from experts on plant operation.

A formal equivalence between propositional expert systems and decision tables is proved, and a practicable procedure given to perform the transformation between propositional expert systems and decision tables. The method gave an order of magnitude speed increase for a well-known expert system in routine use. The method is very general: adaptations are shown for forward and backward chaining in...

In this paper, we describe a content planning mechanism which takes into consideration a user's possible inferences in order to generate the most concise discourse that achieves a given communicative goal. The consideration of a user's inferences results in the addition of information that addresses erroneous inferences , and the omission of easily inferred information. Given a communicative go...

Many abductive understanding systems generate explanations by a backwards chaining process that is neutral both to the explainer's previous experience in similar situations and to why the explainer is attempting to explain. This article examines the relationship of such models to an approach that uses case-based reasoning to generate explanations. In this case-based model, the generation of abd...

This paper presents a determinacy inference analysis for logic programs. The analysis infers determinacy conditions that, if satisfied by a call, ensures that it computes at most one answer and that answer is generated only once. The principal component of the technique is a goalindependent analysis of individual clauses. This derives a condition for a call that ensures only one clause in the m...
