When cells of the anaerobe Streptococcus lactis 7962 are deprived of their normal fermentable energy source, active transport of galactosides is completely abolished although the membrane carriers are still capable of facilitating the equilibration of sugars across the cell membrane. In these nonmetabolizing cells it was possible to test the Mitchell hypothesis of obligatory coupling of proton ...

Cross-metathesis of α- and β-vinyl C-deoxyribosides and α-vinyl C-galactoside with various terminal alkenes under different conditions was studied. The cross-metathesis of the former proceeded with good yields of the corresponding products in ClCH2CH2Cl the latter required the presence of CuI in CH2Cl2 to achieve good yields of the products. A simple method for the preparation of α- and β-vinyl...

Background The formation of protein-protein complexes of the transmembrane receptor integrin and galactoside binding protein galectin assist in adhesion by bridging between cells or cells and the extracellular matrix and form adhesive networks. When HIV is present the galectin bridges between the CD4 co receptor and gp120 ligands thus facilitating HIV infection of the T cell. The main aim of th...

An endogenous beta-galactoside-specific lectin has previously been isolated from rabbit bone marrow. The quantification of extracted lectin now indicates that approximately 75% of the lectin is intracellular in marrow. Indirect immunofluorescence studies show the extracellular lectin is associated with the erythroblast cell surface and is also found in some acellular areas of the marrow stroma....

In the crystal of the title compound, C(7)H(13)IO(5), the molecules are linked by O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds, which build linkages around one screw axis of the cell. These C(5) and C(6) packing motifs expand to R(2) (2)(10) and C(2) (2)(11) motifs and are similar to those found for closely related compounds. The galactoside ring has a (1)C(4) chair conformation.

Full length cDNAs coding for a 14-kDa beta-galactoside binding lectin have been isolated from HL-60 cells and human placenta. Oligonucleotide probes based on a pentapeptide present in several partial sequences of homologous human lectins were used to screen a lambda GT10 HL-60 cDNA library. The HL-60 cDNA clones that were isolated were used to design a synthetic primer representing the 3'-untra...

Abstract β‐Galactose derivatives have recently been reported to selectively inhibit galectin‐3, and a library of O3‐arylated galactosides with varying substitution patterns was designed study such inhibitions further. The were synthesized using diaryliodonium salts under mild transition metal free conditions, providing the target products in moderate good yields. An O3‐trifluoroethylated galact...
