We study combinatorial principles weaker than Ramsey’s theorem for pairs over the system RCA0 (Recursive Comprehension Axiom) with Σ2-bounding. It is shown that the principles of Cohesiveness (COH), Ascending and Descending Sequence (ADS), and Chain/Antichain (CAC) are all Π1-conservative over Σ2-bounding. In particular, none of these principles proves Σ 0 2induction.

Using data describing baseball teams from 1985 to 1998, it is found that Levine’s [Levine, D.I., 1991. Cohesiveness, productivity and wage dispersion. Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization 15, 237–255] team-cohesiveness hypothesis is supported over Ramaswamy and Rowthorn’s [Ramaswamy, R., Rowthorn, E., 1991. Efficiency wages and dispersion. Economica 58, 501–514] danger-potential hypoth...

The aim of this paper is to discuss issues related to communication and exploitation of Information Society related project results emanating from RTD and deployment projects funded by EU programmes such as IST programme, eTen, eContent and eContent plus etc. In particular it will examine how these results may impact other major EU policies e.g. public health, environment, education etc. First,...

Bias formulae are derived for ecological regression estimators. These formulae are useful for determining the direction and magnitude of bias in estimation. It is shown that when group cohesion is higher in areas with higher concentrations of group members and when polarization is higher in more homogeneous areas, ecological regression estimates of polarization will tend to be biased upward. Bo...

The number of digital media in urban space, along with their interactive functionalities, is constantly expanding. While deployment is often motivated by commercial objectives, the impact on their urban surroundings is often neglected. In this position paper, we build upon an analysis of two recent case studies to propose four design considerations for situated public displays in urban space, i...

The economic crisis has revived the interest on the increasingly vulnerable position of youth in the labour market. In this paper we analyze flexicurity policies in the Nordic and in Southern European countries in the period previous to the crisis and explore whether they contribute to explain this trend and differences across countries. First of all, it is argued how the disadvantaged position...

This paper describes the I-Help peer help network, where helpers and helpees are paired according to the contents of their user models. Although originally designed for large groups, in this paper we suggest ways in which I-Help may be used in a small group, problem-based learning curriculum. The use of I-Help will be very different in this context: it is not expected to be necessary for all st...

Green infrastructure (GI) can help bring people together, engaging individuals from different social groupings that may not normally interact. Green space offers possibilities: increasing social activity, improving community cohesion, developing local attachment and lowering crime levels, particularly in deprived communities (Bell et al., 2008; Weldon et al., 2007). Certain groups in society ar...

This paper examines the impact of ethnic divisions on conflict. The empirical specification is informed by a theoretical model of conflict (Esteban and Ray, 2011) in which equilibrium conflict intensity is related to just three distributional indices of diversity: ethnic polarization, ethnic fractionalization, and a Greenberg-Gini index of “difference” constructed across ethnic groups. Our empi...

The aim of this paper is to analyze whether the recruitment of elites in the Western world leads to social cohesion, or to the opposite -social stratification. We show that the main change that occurred in the way the Western world trained its elites is that meritocracy became the basis for their recruitment. Although meritocratic selection should result in the best being chosen, we show that m...
