The peri-Mediterranean and western Asian Plio-Pleistocene faunas are characterised by the sporadic presence of a palaeotragine taxon with a complex nomenclatural history, usually referred to the genus Mitilanotherium. Due to its rarity, its morphological characters are incompletely known. Recently excavated giraffid material in the Lower Pleistocene locality of Sésklo (Thessaly, Greece) include...
This paper investigates whether the Chilean financial reforms of the 1980s have contributed to reducing market imperfections in Chilean capital markets in the late 1980 and early 1990s. To analyse this issue, patterns of investment and its finance for different types of firms is studied, based on balance sheet information of a panel of 70 firms. The general conclusion is that it remains difficu...
Neural networks provide a basis for studying child language development in that such networks emphasise learning. We report a simulation of some key aspects of child language development during infancy. We argue that in order to simulate the uniquely human language learning, it is important to use a ‘conglomerate’ neural network architecture that integrates the collective strengths of a variety...
The African Plio-Pleistocene hominins known as australopiths evolved a distinctive craniofacial morphology that traditionally has been viewed as a dietary adaptation for feeding on either small, hard objects or on large volumes of food. A historically influential interpretation of this morphology hypothesizes that loads applied to the premolars during feeding had a profound influence on the evo...
This paper analyzes the implications of diversification strategies and conglomerate mergers for the cost of capital in a model where the cost of capital depends on liquidity. We show that in a finitely liquid market with asymmetrically informed investors, both the benefits and the costs of diversification can be related to two characteristics of a firm’s investment opportunities. The benefits c...
Bolitoglossa meliana, a new species from the mountains of central Guatemala, is described and assigned to the B. franklini group. Electrophoretic comparisons with the other species in the group confirm the distinctiveness of B. meliana, but cause us to question the validity of B. brevipes and B. nigroflavescens, which are hereby synonymized with B. franklini. Plio-Pleistocene tectonic and clima...
Silicosis is the most common occupational lung disease worldwide. It leads to respiratory impairment and may have associated infections that decrease pulmonary function. We describe the case of a 55-year-old man with chronic silicosis who presented with hemoptysis and a cavitated conglomerate mass. The final diagnosis was silicotuberculosis.
