This study addresses the development of a non-sterile heterotrophic microalgae process, mainly using Scenedesmus sp., for treatment wastewater with high concentration organic matter and biomass production. Urban swine wastewaters were used as source carbon. A C:N ratio 3.4:1 provided maximum 1.22 g/L on day 13 autotrophic conditions. Using same under dark conditions 1.1 was measured 14. Heterot...

The influence of the carbon source on metabolism and growth Clostridium aceticum was investigated, supplying either CO or fructose as sole source. acid solvent production patterns were determined under autotrophic heterotrophic conditions, elucidating effect pH substrate's bioconversion pattern. highest maximum specific rate observed with CO, organism's optimal reaching 0.052 h−1 an acetic conc...

The marine autotroph Aureococcus anophagefferens (Pelagophyceae) was rendered axenic in order to investigate hydrolysis rates of peptides, chitobiose, acetamide, and urea as indicators of the ability to support growth on dissolved organic nitrogen. Specific rates of hydrolysis varied between 8 and 700% of rates observed in associated heterotrophic marine bacteria.

Oceanic dissolved organic matter (DOM) is an assemblage of reduced carbon compounds, which results from biotic and abiotic processes. The biotic processes consist in either release or uptake of specific molecules by marine organisms. Heterotrophic bacteria have been mostly considered to influence the DOM composition by preferential uptake of certain compounds. However, they also secrete a varie...

Abstract. Heterotrophic CO2 fixation is a significant yet underappreciated flux in environmental carbon cycling. In contrast to photosynthesis and chemolithoautotrophy – the main recognized autotrophic pathways importance of heterotrophic remains enigmatic. All heterotrophs from microorganisms humans take up incorporate it into their biomass. Depending on availability quality growth substrates,...

Biomass, production and heterotrophic activity of bacterioplankton were determined for two weeks in the Great Astrolabe Reef lagoon, Fiji. Bacterial and Bacterial activities were distributed homogeneously throughout the water column (20 to 40m deep) and varied little from site to site inside the lagoon. Bacterioplankton biomass and production also varied little over a diel period with coefficie...

BACKGROUND Microbial consortia composed of autotrophic and heterotrophic species abound in nature, yet examples of synthetic communities with mixed metabolism are limited in the laboratory. We previously engineered a model cyanobacterium, Synechococcus elongatus PCC 7942, to secrete the bulk of the carbon it fixes as sucrose, a carbohydrate that can be utilized by many other microbes. Here, we ...

BACKGROUND In comparison with phototrophic growth, heterotrophic conditions can significantly increase growth rates, final cell number and cell mass in microalgae cultures. Neochloris oleoabundans is a microalga of biotechnological interest that accumulates lipids under phototrophic and nitrogen-limited conditions. Heterotrophic flask culture experiments were conducted to identify carbon source...

Coal mine drainage refers to the acidic drainage caused by surface mining, deep mining or coal refuse piles. Being highly acidic with elevated levels of dissolved metals, it is otherwise known as “Acid Mine Drainage (AMD)”. Formation of AMD is due to a series of geochemical and microbiological processes involving acidophilic chemolithotrophs such as Thiobacillus, Thiomispora, Leptospirillum etc...

The unicellular photosynthetic model-organism cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. PCC6803 can grow photoautotrophically using CO2 or heterotrophically using glucose as the sole carbon source. Several pathways are involved in carbon metabolism in Synechocystis, and the concerted regulation of these pathways by numerous known and unknown genes is critical for the survival and growth of the organism....
