Electrospinning is based on so-called bending instability which results in an erratic spiralling motion of the liquid jet as it proceeds towards a collecting electrode, where it is eventually deposited as a mat of micro/nanosized fibres. Most electrospinning models formulated within the slender approximation rely, however, on an inconsistent description of electrostatic interactions which rende...

This paper presents results from an auditory-visual recognition experiment employing short utterances of German produced with varying attitudinal expressions. It is based on 16 different kinds of social and/or propositional attitudes which place speakers in various social interactions with a partner of inferior, equal or superior status, and having a communication aim with a positive, neutral o...

Hierarchical approaches, which are dominated by the generic agglomerative clustering algorithm, are suitable for cases in which the count of distinct clusters in the data is not known a priori; this is not a rare case in real data. On the other hand, important problems are related to their application, such as susceptibility to errors in the initial steps that propagate all the way to the final...

We analyze the style and structure of story narrative using the case of film scripts. The practical importance of this is noted, especially the need to have support tools for television movie writing. We use the Casablanca film script, and scripts from six episodes of CSI (Crime Scene Investigation). For analysis of style and structure, we quantify various central perspectives discussed in McKe...

Clustering groups records that are similar to each other into the same group, and those that are less similar into different groups. Clustering data of mixed types is difficult due to different data characteristics. Extending Gower’s metric for nominal and ordinal data is incorporated into an agglomerative hierarchical clustering algorithm to cluster mixed type data. This paper describes the ex...

In the music information retrieval field, the most important topic is to extract the feature which represents the content from the music objects. The content feature is useful for music analysis, music retrieval, and other services. In this paper, our data form is MusicXML. We extract the structural feature from the classical music object and it is based on music theory and music form. Accordin...

This paper describes a method for linear text segmentation which is twice as accurate and over seven times as fast as the state-of-the-art (Reynar, 1998). Inter-sentence similarity is replaced by rank in the local context. Boundary locations are discovered by divisive clustering.

In this investigation we propose a novel summarization method of Web pages using hierarchical expression. We discuss close relationship between summarization and hierarchical clustering to obtain the results, and we examine how to evaluate hierarchical summarization based on both correlation and structural aspects. We describe some experimental results using NTCIR Web documents to examine our m...

This work analyzes the distribution of past CS229 projects by applying hierarchical agglomerative clustering. The clusters reveal which topics are very popular and which topics are more unique. Tracking the clusters over time also provides insight into how student projects have shifted over time. This knowledge will help future students select interesting and unique projects.

This paper examines the English particle placements of EFL learners’ writings in three East Asian countries (Chinese, Japan, and Korea). Three parts of the TOEFL11 corpus were chosen, and all the sentences with particles were extracted. The ICE-GB was chosen as a native speakers’ English. Then, eleven linguistic factors were manually encoded. The collected data were analyzed with R. Correlation...
