We report the synthesis of self-organized titania nanotubes and nanocrystalline titania powders employing an alternative and novel approach. Integrating these nanostructures in a binder-free working electrode improved the capacitance up to 911 μF cm(-2), which is around one to two orders of magnitude higher than the conventional electric double layer capacitors.

Silicon as the negative electrode material of lithium ion batteries has a very large capacity, the exploitation of which is impeded by the volume changes taking place upon electrochemical cycling. A Si electrode displaying a controlled porosity could circumvent the difficulty. In this perspective, we present a preparative method that yields ordered arrays of electrochemically competent silicon ...

Human activities and natural processes release arsenic into ground and surface waters creating potentially serious environmental problems for humans and other living organisms [1]. In recognition of this threat, a new arsenic limit of 10lg/l, lowered from the current 50g/l, will become effective in 2006 for drinking water systems in the United States. Consequently, there is an urgent demand for...

We report that the ferromagnetism of highly ordered pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) samples as measured by hysteretic magnetization loops can be diminished and eventually extinguished with sufficiently long high vacuum anneals at temperatures on the order of 2300 !C. Concomitant with the extinction of ferromagnetism, we observe an annealinduced increase in grain size (accompanied by possible edge rec...

We report on the synthesis and magnetic characterization of ultralong (1 cm) arrays of highly ordered coaxial nanowires with nickel cores and graphene stacking shells (also known as metal-filled carbon nanotubes). Carbon-containing nickel nanowires are first grown on a nanograted surface by magnetron sputtering. Then, a post-annealing treatment favors the metal-catalyzed crystallization of carb...

We review ground states and excitations of a quantum antiferromagnet on triangular and other frustrated lattices. We pay special attention to the combined effects of magnetic field h, spatial anisotropy R and spin magnitude S. The focus of the review is on the novel collinear spin density wave and spin nematic states, which are characterized by fully gapped transverse spin excitations with S(z)...

The preparation and electrical properties of high-temperature superconductor nanowire arrays are reported for the first time. YBa2Cu3O(7-delta) nanowires with widths as small as 10 nm (much smaller than the magnetic penetration depth) and lengths up to 200 microm are studied by four-point electrical measurements. All nanowires exhibit a superconducting transition above liquid nitrogen temperatu...

Rafts, or functional domains, are transient nano- or mesoscopic structures in the exoplasmic leaflet of the plasma membrane, and are thought to be essential for many cellular processes. Using neutron diffraction and computer modelling, we present evidence for the existence of highly ordered lipid domains in the cholesterol-rich (32.5 mol%) liquid-ordered ([Formula: see text]) phase of dipalmito...

Monolayers of micro- and nanoparticles at fluid interfaces are a key component in a variety of applications, ranging from particle lithography to stabilizers in foams or emulsions. In addition to commonly used "hard" colloids, soft polymeric particles like microgels are attracting increasing attention due to their potential in the fabrication of tailored and responsive assemblies. In particular...

One of the most desirable goals of graphene research is to produce ordered two-dimensional (2D) chemical derivatives of suitable quality for monolayer device fabrication. Here we reveal, by focal series exit wave reconstruction (EWR), that C2F chair is a stable graphene derivative and demonstrates pristine long-range order limited only by the size of a functionalized domain. Focal series of ima...
